Chương 12 - Threshold of the Precinct

The heavy steel doors of the precinct holding area felt cold against my back as I waited on the wooden bench just outside the interrogation room. Through the wired glass panel, I could see Eleanor sitting upright at the stainless-steel table, her navy blue lace gown still immaculate, her gray hair refusing to loosen from its tight bun. She sat in total silence, her hands folded neatly in front of her, refusing to speak to the duty attorney assigned to her until her high-priced corporate counsel arrived from the city.
David sat a few chairs down from me, staring blankly at the scuffed linoleum floor. He hadn't spoken a word since we left the hotel ballroom behind the flashing red lights of Miller's cruiser. The pristine wedding reception had dissolved into shattered ice and untouched wedding cake, swallowed by the cold reality of what lay hidden beneath the polite veneer of high-society family life.
Miller walked out of the back office, holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing the glass vial and the residue report. He stopped in front of us, letting out a long, weary breath.
"The preliminary field test came back positive," Miller said quietly, looking directly at David. "It’s a synthetic muscle relaxant and paralytic agent, completely untraceable in standard post-meal toxicology unless specifically screened for. If you had finished that champagne glass, Mrs. Vance, your heart rate would have dropped low enough within twenty minutes for the paramedics to write it off as natural cardiac arrest."
David didn't look up. His hands were clasped tightly between his knees, his knuckles white. "She... she raised a toast," he muttered, his voice hollow, replaying the exact words from the ballroom in his mind. *A toast to the couple, let's hear it.*
"She set the stage," I said softly, my voice steady as I looked down at my own hands, no longer shaking. "And she expected me to play the tragic, fragile bride to the very end."

Miller patted my shoulder gently before turning back toward the interrogation room door. "Her lawyer is twenty minutes out. We have her on attempted administration of a noxious substance and reckless endangerment. Once the search warrant for her estate goes through tonight, we'll likely find the rest of her pharmacy."
I stood up, testing my weight fully on my left foot. The numbness was completely gone, burned away by the cold, sharp air of reality. I looked at David, seeing him not as the golden groom from the floral arches, but as a man finally waking up from a lifelong illusion. The wedding was over, but the rest of my life was finally mine to claim.
