Chapter 15 - The Final Evening

Months slipped by with the quiet, steady rhythm of a well-tended hearth. The corporate board had attempted one final, feeble challenge in the weeks following our terrace gathering, but Arthur's absolute refusal to back down—backed by the unanimous support of the estate staff and Leo's newfound, vocal presence—had neutralized their resistance entirely. They had retreated to their city offices, leaving the mansion to the only people who truly understood its history.

Evening settled over the estate, casting long, peaceful shadows across the polished marble floor of the grand ballroom where the entire storm had begun. The massive crystal chandelier overhead cast a warm, golden glow down upon the double staircase, illuminating the quiet domesticity of our new life.

I stood near the base of the stairs, adjusting the silver locket around my neck while watching Arthur and Leo build an impossibly tall tower out of wooden blocks on the Persian rug. The boy's laughter echoed off the high vaulted ceiling, bright and uninhibited, completely erasing the memory of the long, heavy silence that had held him captive for four years.

Arthur looked up from the floor, catching my eye across the open space. He gently extracted himself from the sprawling blocks, leaving Leo to admire his leaning tower, and walked across the gleaming marble toward me. The black button-down shirt he wore reminded me of that chaotic night under the spotlight, yet everything between us had transformed from a desperate gamble into an unshakable truth.

"Penny for your thoughts," Arthur said softly, stopping just inches away. He reached out, his warm fingers brushing a stray lock of hair from my cheek before resting gently on my shoulder.

"I was just thinking about the song," I murmured, leaning into his touch as the fire crackled softly in the massive stone hearth nearby. "And how a single melody can change the entire course of a life."

"It wasn't just the song," Arthur replied, his dark eyes shining with deep, enduring affection as he pulled me close against his chest. "It was the heart behind it."

Leo suddenly abandoned his blocks, running over to wrap his arms tightly around both of our legs, forcing us to lean down into a shared embrace. The past was no longer a locked door, but a foundation we had built together, ready to face whatever tomorrow brought under the light of our own home.
