Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Clash

The morning sun brought no warmth, only a biting autumn chill that cut through the tall windows of the executive boardroom on the top floor of the family tower. Polished mahogany tables stretched out beneath a massive crystal chandelier, surrounded by twelve high-backed leather chairs. Ten members of the board of directors sat in rigid silence as Arthur and I walked through the double doors together.

Lady Eleanor sat near the head of the table, her hands folded neatly over a thick leather-bound dossier. A smug, victorious smile played at the corners of her mouth as she looked up at us.

"Arthur," the senior managing director began, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with practiced solemnity. "We have called this emergency session to address severe breaches of estate protocol and recent public embarrassments that threaten the foundation's corporate standing. Specifically, your reckless public statements in the ballroom, and your ongoing association with a former disgraced employee."

Arthur did not sit down. He remained standing at the head of the table, keeping his hand firmly planted on the small of my back, anchoring me against the sea of hostile stares.

"There is no crisis here," Arthur said, his voice cutting through the murmurs of the room with absolute authority. "There is only a family that was broken by lies and has finally been made whole."

"She is a thief and an opportunist, Arthur!" Eleanor interjected, standing up to command the room's attention. She slid the leather dossier across the table, scattering photocopies of old employment records and police inquiry logs across the polished wood. "She fled this estate under a cloud of suspicion four years ago. She has no place in our society, let alone in your home as a prospective wife."

Before Arthur could deliver the crushing counter-evidence we had prepared the night before, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom clicked open once more. Light footsteps tapped against the carpeted floor.

We all turned. Leo stood in the doorway, wearing his cream-colored sweater, clutching his worn stuffed rabbit under one arm. He walked right past the stunned directors, marched straight to where Arthur and I stood, and reached up to take my hand.

"Mama," Leo said clearly, looking up at the board members with absolute, unshakeable calm. "She stays with us."

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Several directors shifted uncomfortably in their seats, staring at the boy who was not supposed to speak, let alone testify in a corporate dispute.

Arthur looked down at his son, then raised his eyes to meet Eleanor's panicked gaze. "The vote is over," Arthur said, his voice ringing with finality. "I am marrying her today. If any member of this board has a problem with my family, your resignation will be accepted by noon."
