Chapter 7: Chain of Custody

The cold steel of the handcuffs clicked shut around Richard's wrists with a sharp, mechanical finality that echoed off the polished mahogany paneling of the VIP suite. He didn't struggle—men of his standing didn't brawl when the game was lost; instead, they calculated the cost of their defense. As two federal agents escorted him toward the shattered doorway, his gaze locked onto mine for one long, unblinking second. There was no apology in his eyes, only a cold, transactional appraisal of an adversary who had managed to slip through a flaw in the architecture he thought he owned.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake," Richard said softly as he passed me, his voice perfectly level despite the agents pulling him forward. "The foundation audit covers three continents. You've only exposed the surface."

"Then it's a good thing we have the master keys," the lead investigator replied, his hand resting firmly on Richard's elbow as they guided him out into the smoke-tinged hallway.

I stood by the window as the footsteps faded toward the service elevators. The suite felt suddenly vast and hollow, the air stale with the scent of burnt gunpowder and expensive cologne. My fingers felt cramped around the dark smartphone, the battery indicator glowing a steady, reassuring green. The physical scratches on my face and shoulder began to ache more acutely now that the adrenaline was slowly receding from my bloodstream, leaving a cold, heavy weariness in its place.

Moments later, a junior investigator stepped back into the room, holding a clear evidence bag containing Richard's discarded cufflinks and the locked carbon-fiber briefcase. "We've secured the local terminals," she said, checking a small notepad. "The field office wants you downtown for an official statement. Your father is waiting in the transport vehicle downstairs."

I nodded, sliding the smartphone securely into the pocket of my asymmetrical black evening gown. The heavy silk felt stiff against my leg, stained with the dust of a fractured night. Walking out of the suite, I stepped carefully over the splintered wood of the doorway and followed the investigator down the dim corridor, leaving the grand ballroom behind us. Below, the crystal chandeliers cast a cold, muted light over empty tables and forgotten programs, a monument to a world that had vanished behind locked steel doors in less than an hour.
