Chapter 5: The Digital Threshold

The progress bar on the secure terminal ticked over to one hundred percent. A crisp, automated chime sounded from the desktop speakers, followed by a text prompt: Transfer Complete. Secure Receipts Generated.

I let out a long, ragged breath, my shoulders dropping as the weight of the past six months seemed to lift just an inch. Across the room, the smart glass windows reflected the flashing red and blue strobes of the federal cruisers idling in the courtyard below. The heavy perimeter gates were fully closed now, casting long, geometric shadows across the asphalt where Richard's imported sedan sat trapped between two tactical vehicles.

My dark smartphone buzzed in my hand. I glanced down at the screen: an incoming encrypted ping from Dad, simple and direct. We're inside the outer ring. Stay where you are.

Before I could reply, a heavy metallic clank echoed from the main corridor—not the frantic pounding of a guest or the angry fist of Richard, but the calculated, methodical breach of a tactical battering ram striking the heavy service doors near the VIP suite. The federal teams hadn't waited for the elevators; they were taking the building by force, clearing every floor from the ground up to ensure no evidence could be scrubbed from the local terminals.

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the red carpet runner stretching out beneath the grand entrance canopy. From this height, the upscale gala looked like a distant, shattered memory. The elite donors who had sipped champagne under the crystal chandeliers an hour ago were now being escorted out in orderly lines by federal marshals, their evening coats clutched tightly against the cool night air.

The door to the VIP suite shuddered under a heavy blow from the outside. The wooden frame splintered around the deadbolt, wood chips flying across the polished floor.

"Federal agents! Step away from the door!" a muffled voice shouted through the ruined timber.

May you like

I stepped back, raising my hands slowly as the deadbolt sheared completely off its mounts. The door swung wide, revealing the dim, smoke-tinged hallway and the determined faces of federal law enforcement officers in tactical gear, weapons lowered but ready.

"I'm here," I said, my voice cutting through the hum of the electronics. I held out the dark smartphone, its screen glowing steadily in the cool blue light. "The files are on the terminal. And Richard is down on the mezzanine."
