Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT THE TRUTH CAME HOME

Thomas Voss disappeared on a Thursday.

By Friday morning, investigators had confirmed that he had left his home, abandoned his company-issued phone, and withdrawn a substantial amount of cash.

His attorney stated that Thomas intended to cooperate with the investigation.

But no one could locate him.

Victor Hale also stopped responding to calls.

For the first time, the two men who had spent years manipulating others appeared to be losing control.

Elena did not celebrate.

She knew that frightened people could become unpredictable.

Instead, she focused on protecting the foundation, supporting Rebecca, and helping the investigators preserve evidence.

Adrien focused on something smaller.

His employees.

He had spent years chasing expansion, prestige, and recognition.

Now he walked through half-empty offices, speaking with people whose mortgages and families depended on the company.

He learned that one project manager had postponed surgery because she feared losing her health insurance.

He learned that a construction supervisor was supporting his elderly father.

He learned that several employees had been quietly looking for other jobs because they no longer trusted management.

Adrien listened.

He did not promise miracles.

He worked with Daniel and Sarah to establish a transparent employee assistance fund using his personal savings.

He sold his luxury watch collection.

He put his expensive car on the market.

And he canceled a planned executive retreat that would have cost more than several employees earned in a year.

None of those decisions erased his past.

But they represented a different way of measuring success.

One afternoon, Daniel approached him.

“You know, six months ago, you would have called this a public relations opportunity.”

Adrien looked up.

“I know.”

Daniel studied him.

“What changed?”

Adrien thought of Elena.

The gala.

Lily.

Rebecca.

The families at Harbor Point.

“I finally realized that people aren't investments.”

Daniel nodded.

“That's a start.”

That evening, Adrien received a message from Hannah.

Rebecca is willing to speak with you.

His heart began to pound.

He called Sarah immediately.

She helped arrange the meeting through Rebecca's attorney.

The following afternoon, Adrien entered a quiet room at the hospital.

Rebecca sat beside the window.

For a moment, he could not speak.

She looked older.

More fragile.

But her eyes were the same.

“Hello, Adrien.”

His throat tightened.

“Rebecca.”

She gestured toward a chair.

He sat.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then Adrien said:

“I'm sorry.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“For what?”

He swallowed.

“For not believing you. For signing the report. For letting Victor blame you. For not looking for you when you disappeared.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“I was a coward.”

Rebecca watched him quietly.

“Yes,” she said.

The word hurt.

But he did not argue.

She continued.

“You weren't the person who arranged my isolation. You weren't the one threatening my family. But you helped create the circumstances that made me vulnerable.”

Adrien nodded.

“I know.”

Rebecca looked toward the window.

“I spent years imagining what I would say if I ever saw you again.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I understand.”

“I wanted to scream at you.”

He nodded.

“I deserve that.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“This isn't about what you deserve.”

She looked at him.

“It's about what Lily deserves.”

Adrien stopped breathing.

Rebecca continued.

“She deserves to know the truth about her father. But she also deserves stability, safety, and the freedom to decide what kind of relationship she wants.”

Adrien wiped his eyes.

“I'll do whatever she needs.”

Rebecca studied him.

“Then start by being patient.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

“And don't make promises you can't keep.”

“I won't.”

Rebecca took a breath.

“Lily knows that you're her father.”

Adrien covered his mouth.

“She does?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Hannah explained it carefully.”

“How did she react?”

Rebecca smiled faintly.

“She asked whether you like bicycles.”

Adrien laughed through his tears.

“I haven't ridden one in years.”

“Then perhaps you should practice.”

He smiled sadly.

“I will.”

Rebecca's expression softened.

“Adrien, I don't know whether you'll become a good father.”

He lowered his eyes.

“Neither do I.”

“But you have an opportunity to try.”

He nodded.

“Thank you.”

Rebecca looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said:

“Don't thank me. Show Lily that you're willing to do the work.”

When Adrien left the hospital, he sat in his car and cried.

Not because he had been forgiven.

He hadn't.

Not because his problems were over.

They weren't.

He cried because, for the first time, he understood the difference between being given another chance and being entitled to one.

That night, Elena received a call from Rebecca.

“Adrien came.”

“I know.”

“He apologized.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“How did it feel?”

Rebecca considered the question.

“Strange.”

“Strange?”

“I spent years imagining that hearing him admit the truth would make everything better.”

Elena nodded.

“And?”

“It didn't.”

Elena felt tears sting her eyes.

Rebecca continued.

“But it made something possible.”

“What?”

“A future that isn't controlled by what happened to me.”

Elena looked toward the city.

“I hope you get that future.”

Rebecca smiled.

“I hope you do, too.”

After the call, Elena sat alone for a long time.

Then she removed her wedding ring.

She placed it on the table.

She did not feel triumphant.

She felt sad.

But she also felt something she had not experienced in years.

Freedom.

Her phone rang.

Gabriel.

“Elena, we found Thomas.”

She sat upright.

“Where?”

“At a private airport outside Boston.”

“Was he arrested?”

“He's being questioned.”

Elena exhaled.

“Does he have an attorney?”

“Yes.”

Gabriel hesitated.

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“Thomas offered to cooperate.”

Elena felt her pulse quicken.

“Against Victor?”

“Against Victor and Margaret.”

She closed her eyes.

Gabriel continued.

“But he says the entire scheme began with someone else.”

Elena stared at the wall.

“Who?”

Gabriel's voice became grave.

May you like

“Your father.”
