Chapter 10 - THE TRAP SET FOR ELENA

The accusation against Elena spread faster than anyone expected.

By noon, an anonymous source had leaked portions of the suspicious transaction to a financial news website.

The headline was devastating.

WHITMORE FOUNDATION FOUNDER LINKED TO QUESTIONABLE $12 MILLION PAYMENT

The article carefully noted that no wrongdoing had been established.

But the damage began immediately.

Reporters gathered outside the foundation.

Donors requested explanations.

Several partner organizations suspended pending agreements until the facts could be verified.

Elena watched the coverage from her office.

She had spent more than a decade building an organization dedicated to families who rarely received public attention.

Now her own name dominated the headlines.

Margaret called three times.

Elena did not answer.

Gabriel arrived shortly after two.

“We've retained an independent forensic firm,” he said.

Elena nodded.

“Good.”

“They're examining the authorization.”

“I know.”

Gabriel studied her.

“You're remarkably calm.”

Elena gave a tired smile.

“I'm not calm.”

She looked toward the window.

“I'm frightened.”

Gabriel sat across from her.

“Of what?”

“That the people who depend on the foundation will suffer because someone wants to hurt me.”

He nodded.

“Then we protect them first.”

Together, they developed a temporary governance plan.

Elena voluntarily stepped aside from decisions involving the disputed transaction while independent reviewers examined the evidence.

The foundation established an emergency operating reserve to keep essential housing services running.

Donors received a transparent statement explaining what was known and what remained under investigation.

Elena refused to attack the reporters.

She refused to make accusations she could not prove.

And she refused to hide.

At a brief press conference, she stood before the cameras.

“I did not authorize or receive the payment described in these reports.”

Flashbulbs flickered.

“I welcome an independent investigation. Our organization will preserve all relevant records and cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities.”

A reporter called out:

“Are you accusing your husband's company of framing you?”

Elena looked directly at him.

“No.”

Another reporter asked:

“Are you still married to Adrien Laurent?”

Elena paused.

“My marriage is a private matter. The integrity of this foundation is not.”

She stepped away from the microphone.

The statement did not end the controversy.

But it established something important.

Elena would not allow fear to dictate her response.

Across the city, Adrien watched the press conference from his office.

He felt sick.

For years, Elena had quietly helped him survive financial crises.

Now she was facing public scrutiny because of a scheme connected to his company.

He called Sarah.

“I want to make a statement.”

“About what?”

“Elena didn't take that money.”

“Do you have evidence?”

“Not yet.”

“Then don't make claims you can't substantiate.”

Adrien gripped the phone.

“I can't just sit here.”

“You can help investigators find the truth.”

He exhaled.

“How?”

“Start with the company that received the money.”

Adrien opened his laptop.

He examined the corporate registration records.

The company was called Whitmore Advisory Holdings.

Its listed address was a commercial office suite in Delaware.

The registered agent handled hundreds of businesses.

Nothing unusual there.

But the incorporation date caught his attention.

It had been established four months earlier.

The same month someone delivered Lily's birth certificate to the foundation.

Adrien leaned closer.

He examined the filing history.

A name appeared in one of the supporting documents.

Not Elena.

Not Thomas.

Not Victor.

Daniel Mercer.

Adrien froze.

His own chief financial officer.

The man who had helped him investigate the unauthorized transfers.

The man who had told him to tell the truth.

Adrien called Sarah immediately.

“Daniel's name is on the registration.”

Sarah went silent.

“Are you sure?”

“I'm looking at it.”

“Don't confront him.”

Adrien stared at the screen.

“He's been helping me.”

“That doesn't mean he's innocent. It also doesn't mean he's guilty. We need to verify what role he played.”

Adrien closed his eyes.

Another person he trusted.

Another secret.

He remembered Daniel arriving with coffee after the gala.

The concern in his voice.

The way he had insisted on preserving evidence.

Could it all have been an act?

Or had someone used Daniel's identity, too?

Adrien forwarded the documents to Sarah.

Then he waited.

That evening, Daniel entered Adrien's office.

“We have a problem,” he said.

Adrien looked up slowly.

“Another one?”

Daniel closed the door.

“Someone accessed the company's backup servers.”

Adrien felt his pulse quicken.

“When?”

“Last night.”

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

“The access log shows my credentials.”

Adrien stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“But I wasn't there.”

Adrien stood.

“Daniel, I need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“Do you know anything about Whitmore Advisory Holdings?”

Daniel's expression changed.

He looked genuinely confused.

“No. Why?”

Adrien studied him.

“Your name appears on the incorporation documents.”

Daniel went pale.

“What?”

Adrien turned the screen toward him.

Daniel read the filing.

His hands began to tremble.

“That's my signature.”

Adrien waited.

Daniel looked up.

“But I didn't sign it.”

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“Adrien, someone has been using my identity.”

Adrien stared at him.

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He removed a small envelope.

“I was going to show you this tomorrow.”

“What is it?”

“A letter I received this morning.”

Adrien opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Daniel's wife and two young sons stood outside their home.

Across the photograph, someone had written:

Keep helping Adrien, and your family pays.

Adrien felt a cold wave of dread.

Daniel's voice broke.

“I didn't know what to do.”

Adrien looked at his friend.

For years, he had measured people by what they could contribute to his success.

Now he saw a frightened father standing in front of him.

“Daniel,” he said quietly, “we're going to get your family somewhere safe.”

Daniel stared.

“And the company?”

Adrien looked at the photograph.

“The company can wait.”

Then his phone rang.

Elena.

He answered.

“Adrien, Caroline found something.”

“What?”

“The electronic signature on the twelve-million-dollar authorization was created using a compromised certificate.”

Adrien closed his eyes.

“Can she prove it?”

“She thinks so.”

Relief flooded through him.

But Elena continued.

“There's more.”

“What?”

“The certificate was issued through a system controlled by Thomas Voss.”

Adrien looked toward Daniel.

“And?”

Elena's voice tightened.

May you like

“Thomas has disappeared.”
