Chapter 5 - The Price of a Stolen Childhood

The first gunshot shattered the kitchen window.

Victoria screamed.

Noah dropped to the floor.

Glass scattered across the tiles.

“Stay down!” Victoria shouted.

She grabbed Noah and pulled him behind the kitchen island.

Another shot struck the wall.

Noah began crying.

“Mommy!”

Victoria held him against her chest.

“Don't move, sweetheart.”

Footsteps sounded outside.

A man's voice called through the broken window.

“Victoria! Mr. Whitmore wants the boy!”

Victoria's entire body trembled.

For the first time, she understood what it meant to be powerless.

For years, she had used Richard Whitmore's influence to silence people.

Now that same power had turned against her.

She looked at Noah.

His cheeks were wet.

His small hands clutched her sweater.

He was terrified.

And she had brought him here.

Victoria closed her eyes.

Every terrible decision she had made seemed to gather around her.

Elise begging to see her baby.

The forged medical papers.

The locked door.

The lies.

The stolen lullaby.

She had told herself she was building a family.

But families are not built by destroying someone else's.

Victoria reached into her purse.

She found her phone.

Gabriel's number appeared on the screen.

She pressed call.

He answered immediately.

“Victoria?”

Her voice broke.

“Gabriel, I'm sorry.”

“Where's Noah?”

“He's with me.”

“Is he safe?”

Victoria looked toward the shattered window.

“No.”

Gabriel's voice sharpened.

“Tell me where you are.”

She gave him the address.

Then whispered, “Your father sent men.”

Silence.

“What?”

“He wants Noah.”

Gabriel's breathing changed.

“Victoria, listen carefully. Stay inside. Keep Noah away from the windows. I'm calling the police.”

Another gunshot struck the refrigerator.

Victoria dropped the phone.

Noah screamed.

She grabbed him and ran toward the hallway.

The house had a narrow staircase leading to the basement.

Victoria remembered seeing a storm shelter during a previous visit.

She pulled Noah downstairs.

The basement was dark.

She found the shelter door behind a stack of old furniture.

It was heavy steel.

Inside were shelves, emergency supplies, and a small ventilation system.

Victoria pushed Noah inside.

“Stay here.”

He grabbed her hand.

“Don't leave me!”

She knelt.

“Listen to me, sweetheart. Your daddy is coming.”

“Are you coming too?”

Victoria felt tears spill down her cheeks.

“I don't know.”

Noah began shaking his head.

“No. Please.”

She touched his face.

For years, she had wanted him to love her more than Elise.

Now, with danger closing in, she realized how cruel that desire had been.

“Noah,” she whispered, “I need to tell you something.”

He stared at her.

“Elise is your mother. She never stopped loving you.”

The boy's lips trembled.

“I know.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I'm sorry I kept her away.”

Noah looked at her for a long moment.

Then he whispered, “Why?”

Victoria could not find a good answer.

Because there wasn't one.

“I was selfish,” she said. “I wanted a family so badly that I hurt people who didn't deserve it.”

Noah began crying harder.

Victoria hugged him.

“None of this is your fault. Do you understand?”

He nodded.

She kissed his forehead.

Then closed the shelter door.

The lock clicked.

Victoria stood alone in the basement.

Above her, glass shattered.

Heavy footsteps crossed the kitchen.

A man's voice called her name.

She picked up a metal flashlight from the workbench.

Her hands shook.

But she remained standing.

The basement door opened.

A tall man descended the stairs.

Victoria recognized him.

Caleb Ross.

Richard's longtime security chief.

“Where's the boy?”

Victoria lifted the flashlight.

“Gone.”

Caleb looked around.

“Don't make this difficult.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“That's what Richard always says.”

Caleb took another step.

“Where is Noah?”

Victoria backed toward the far wall.

“You're not taking him.”

Caleb's expression hardened.

“You don't have a choice.”

Then a voice thundered from upstairs.

“POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPON!”

Caleb turned.

For one second, Victoria thought they were saved.

Then Caleb grabbed her.

He pressed his weapon against her side.

“Tell them to leave.”

Victoria's breath caught.

Footsteps pounded down the stairs.

Gabriel appeared behind two armed officers.

His face changed when he saw Victoria.

“Let her go!”

Caleb tightened his grip.

“Tell them to lower their guns!”

Victoria looked at Gabriel.

For the first time in years, she saw him without the illusion of ownership.

He was not a prize.

Not a man she had won.

He was a father desperate to save his child.

And she had nearly destroyed him.

“Gabriel,” she whispered.

His eyes met hers.

“Where's Noah?”

Victoria looked toward the shelter.

Then back at Caleb.

She made her decision.

She drove her elbow backward into Caleb's ribs.

His gun discharged.

A deafening crack filled the basement.

Victoria collapsed.

Gabriel screamed her name.

Caleb was forced to the ground by the officers.

Blood spread across Victoria's blouse.

Gabriel knelt beside her.

“Victoria! Stay with me!”

She struggled to breathe.

“Noah…”

“He's safe. Where is he?”

“The shelter.”

Gabriel looked toward the steel door.

Victoria grabbed his sleeve.

“There's something else.”

“Don't talk.”

“You have to know.”

Her voice was fading.

“Richard didn't do this alone.”

Gabriel leaned closer.

Victoria whispered a name.

And Gabriel went completely still.

May you like

Because the person she named was the last person he would ever have suspected.

“Marcus Hale.”
