Chapter 12 - The Betrayal Beneath the Family Roof

Gabriel looked around the mansion differently after Marcus's warning.

Every familiar room seemed suddenly uncertain.

Every employee had access to some part of the family's life.

The cooks.

The cleaners.

The maintenance staff.

The drivers.

The personal assistants.

For years, he had believed wealth made his family safe.

Now he understood how easily money could purchase access.

Detective Collins reviewed the mansion's staffing records.

Most employees had been hired through reputable agencies.

But one name stood out.

Daniel Mercer.

Gabriel's business partner.

Daniel had personally recommended the household's new financial administrator six months earlier.

He also had access to the company's private security contracts.

Collins questioned him.

Daniel denied everything.

He claimed he knew nothing about Elise's imprisonment.

Nothing about Briarwood.

Nothing about the fertility clinic.

But investigators obtained bank records showing payments from a shell company connected to Richard Whitmore.

The payments had been routed through accounts controlled by Daniel.

When confronted, Daniel admitted he had helped conceal financial irregularities.

But he insisted he had never known Elise was being held against her will.

Collins didn't believe him.

Then Evelyn Brooks came forward.

The housekeeper had been carrying a secret for years.

She told Collins that Daniel had visited the mansion the night Elise first disappeared.

She remembered hearing him argue with Richard in the library.

She remembered Victoria crying.

And she remembered a phrase Daniel had shouted.

“You can't just erase a person!”

Collins leaned forward.

“What happened afterward?”

Evelyn looked down.

“Mr. Whitmore told him to leave.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

“What did he do?”

“He went upstairs.”

“To whose room?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Elise's.”

Gabriel felt sick when Collins told him.

He confronted Daniel in the presence of his attorney.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Gabriel, I tried to stop it.”

“Then why didn't you?”

“Because your father threatened to destroy me.”

Gabriel stared at him.

“You all keep saying that.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“You had seven years to tell me.”

“I know.”

“You watched Noah grow up without his mother.”

Daniel began crying.

“I know.”

Gabriel stepped away.

He was beginning to understand that cowardice could cause as much damage as deliberate cruelty.

Daniel finally revealed that he had hidden a copy of Elise's original evidence.

It was stored inside a private archive at Whitmore Holdings.

The documents contained proof of illegal property acquisitions, bribery, and money laundering.

Elise had discovered the scheme while volunteering with a housing charity.

Several low-income families had been forced from their homes through fraudulent legal proceedings.

Whitmore Holdings had profited from the redevelopment.

Elise had tried to help the displaced families.

Richard had ordered her to stop.

She refused.

And that refusal had helped seal her fate.

Gabriel listened in silence.

For years, he had believed his father built the company through hard work and brilliant decisions.

Now he saw the suffering hidden beneath the profits.

He made a decision.

He would cooperate fully with investigators.

Even if it meant losing the company.

Even if it meant losing his fortune.

Even if it meant publicly acknowledging that the Whitmore name had been built partly on injustice.

But before he could announce his decision, Collins received an urgent call.

A federal team had located Richard near Montreal.

He had been taken into custody pending extradition proceedings.

Gabriel felt a wave of relief.

Then Collins's expression changed.

She listened carefully.

“Are you certain?”

A pause.

“Send me everything.”

She ended the call.

Gabriel stepped forward.

“What happened?”

Collins looked at him.

“Richard had a letter in his possession.”

“For whom?”

“For Noah.”

Gabriel's stomach tightened.

“What does it say?”

Collins hesitated.

May you like

Then she answered.

“It says Richard never intended Gabriel to find out that Noah was his biological son.”
