Chapter 15: The New Dawn

The morning sun rose over the fully restored estate with a brilliant, blinding clarity that chased away every lingering shadow of the winter past. Through the arched living room windows, the emerald lawns stretched out toward the gated drive, free of snowdrifts and untouched by corporate greed.
I stood by the window holding a white porcelain teacup filled with fresh, steaming broth, the silver spoon resting quietly against the saucer. The familiar weight of the porcelain felt grounding, a reminder of where we had begun and how far we had traveled through the ice and silence.
Vance walked into the room carrying a leather folio under one arm, his expression calm and utterly at peace. He stopped a few feet away, watching me for a moment before letting out a soft breath of morning air.
"The federal investigators finalized the audit report an hour ago," Vance said, a faint smile touching his lips. "Thorne's assets have been frozen pending trial, and the foundation board has officially ratified the new trust charter. You and I are officially joint executors of the estate."
I turned from the window, lowering the teacup to the mahogany side table. "That's quite a promotion for a maid."
"You were never just a maid, Elena," Vance said, closing the distance between us until the space vanished entirely. He reached out, taking my hands in his, his thumb tracing my knuckles with a steady, reverent care. "You are the one who kept this family from freezing to death. And I don't want to run this estate without you—not as an employee, not as a guest, but as my partner in every single thing we build from here on out."
Outside, the spring birds sang in the awakening trees, their calls echoing through the high-ceilinged room. My heart settled into a deep, unwavering calm as I looked up into his eyes, seeing no walls left to climb, no secrets left to unearth.

"I'm not going anywhere," I whispered, smiling as I leaned into his embrace.
Vance pulled me close, sealing our future with a kiss as the golden morning light flooded every corner of the grand living room, finally bringing the long winter to a permanent end.
