Chapter 10: Tea by the Fire

The evening stillness returned to the mansion, softer and deeper than before, untouched by corporate threats or bitter winter gales. The fire in the grand living room roared with dry oak logs, casting a warm amber glow across the Persian rugs and the polished brass chandelier. The elderly man had already retired to his quarters upstairs, resting peacefully under heavy wool blankets with a steady, quiet pulse.

I carried a fresh porcelain teacup resting on a silver saucer containing warm, fragrant broth toward the low armchair by the hearth. Vance was sitting there alone, his suit jacket discarded over the back of the sofa, his white shirt collar unbuttoned as he stared into the flickering flames.

"You didn't have to face Thorne alone out there," I said quietly, stopping beside his chair and holding out the saucer.

Vance looked up, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. He reached out, his fingers lightly brushing mine as he took the porcelain cup from my hands, careful not to spill a single drop onto the polished wood. "Neither did you," he replied, patting the velvet cushion of the chair beside him. "Sit down with me."

I hesitated for a fraction of a second before lowering myself into the adjacent seat. The heat from the fireplace washed over us, chasing away the last lingering chill of the snowstorm pressed against the arched windows. The silence between us no longer felt tentative or guarded; it was comfortable, earned through shared peril and an unyielding refusal to look away from the truth.

"My father asked about you today," Vance said softly, turning his head to look at me. "He said he hasn't seen anyone hold this house together with such quiet strength since my mother passed."

"I just did what was right," I murmured, staring down at the silver spoon resting against the porcelain rim.

"More than right," Vance whispered, leaning closer until the distance between us vanished entirely. He reached out, his hand gently cupping my cheek, his thumb tracing the line of my jaw with a tenderness that defied every harsh rule of the world we lived in.

When he leaned in, I closed my eyes and met him halfway, sealing our fragile, hard-won truce with a slow, deliberate kiss that promised a future neither of us had dared to imagine just days before. Outside, the stars broke through the clearing night sky, shining down on an estate finally brought back to life.
