Chương 4 - The Public Park and the Chalk Drawing

The elementary school playground was empty at four in the afternoon, the chain-link fence casting long shadows across the woodchip mulch. Lily sat on the edge of the asphalt basketball court, her long brown hair tied back with a simple yellow ribbon, furiously working on a sprawling mural of purple flowers and chunky yellow suns using a box of sidewalk chalk.
I sat on a wooden green bench fifty feet away, my hands buried deep in the pockets of my cream coat. Ten feet from me, Julian sat on the opposite end of the slats. He wore a simple charcoal sweater and dark jeans instead of his usual tailored suit, though he still looked entirely out of place against the peeling paint of the neighborhood park equipment.
"She loves art," I said quietly, breaking ten minutes of heavy silence as we watched Lily smudge a cloud with her palm. "She spends hours drawing things she sees out the window. Sometimes she draws a man in a black coat standing by a fountain. I told her it was just a character from a storybook."
Julian didn't answer right away. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small black leather notebook, turning it over once before setting it gently on the wooden slat between us.
"I spoke to a family attorney this morning," he said, his voice measured, disciplined, returning to the pragmatic tone of a man used to managing outcomes. "I’m not filing for custody, Elena. I’m not going to drag her into a courtroom battle that makes the evening news. That's your nightmare, and I respect it too much to build it."
I turned my head to look at him, surprised by the lack of defensive arrogance in his posture. "Then what do you want, Julian?"
"I want to be in her life," he said, turning his head to meet my eyes directly. "On your terms, within your boundaries, in this neighborhood if that's what it takes. But I want her to know who I am. And I want the right to pay for her schooling, her clothes, her future—things you shouldn't have to carry alone just because I was a coward six years ago."

On the asphalt, Lily suddenly stood up, wiping purple chalk dust from her floral dress on her palms. She turned around, spotted Julian sitting on the bench, and froze. For three long seconds, she simply stared at him with those wide, inquisitive brown eyes, tilting her head to the side in a carbon copy of the exact gesture Julian made when he was deep in thought.
Julian didn't rush toward her. He didn't stand up or call out her name. He simply raised his hand in a slow, restrained wave, offering a gentle, tentative smile that didn't reach his eyes until Lily slowly, cautiously, raised her small hand and waved back.
