Chương 1 - The Weight of a Cream-Colored Coat

The polished marble floors of the grand hotel lobby reflected the warm, crystal chandelier lighting like dark water. My heels clicked against the stone, a sharp, nervous rhythm that I tried to steady as I kept one hand resting firmly on my daughter's shoulder. Lily walked beside me, her small fingers clutching the worn ear of her stuffed toy rabbit, Pip, dragging the plush paws dangerously close to the dust-free expanse. She wore her favorite white hair bow and a floral dress that smelled faintly of strawberry laundry detergent.
Then the world stopped moving.
A man in a tailored black suit, complete with a crisp black shirt and matching tie, stepped out from the archway near the elevators and cut directly across our path. He halted abruptly, less than two paces away. The scent of cedar and expensive cologne cut through the ambient hotel chatter and the soft echoing footsteps of distant guests. Security guards in dark uniforms lingered near the gilded pillars in the background, their eyes sharp, tracking the sudden disruption in the flow of the afternoon crowd.
I froze, the blood draining from my face so fast my vision tunneled at the edges. My coat felt suddenly heavy, like lead draped over my shoulders. I didn't breathe. I didn't blink. I just stared into the sharp, familiar lines of his face—a face I had spent six years convincing myself I would never have to look at across an ordinary room again. Julian Sterling stared back, his chest barely moving beneath his dark suit.
Lily looked upward, her wide, curious eyes shifting between my rigid posture and the tall stranger blocking our exit. The silence between us stretched, thick and suffocating, untouched by the distant murmur of the concierge desk.

"Mom," Lily whispered, her small voice cutting through the heavy air with terrifying clarity. "Why does that man look like me?"
I tightened my grip on her shoulders until my knuckles ached beneath the fabric of my cream-colored coat. I forced my jaw to lock, terrified that if I opened my mouth, the entire fragile architecture of our quiet life would crumble onto the marble floor. Julian’s expression cracked, the carefully maintained mask of corporate coldness dissolving into something pale, stunned, and devastatingly real. He looked down at the child, then up at me, his gaze searching my eyes for a denial I couldn't manage to form.
