Chapter 8: The VIP Lounge

The private VIP lounge was a dimly lit sanctuary away from the glittering chaos of the ballroom, furnished with heavy velvet seating, a polished mahogany table, and dark wood paneling that muffled the distant strains of orchestral music. I stepped inside first, turning to face the doorway as Dr. Aris Thorne followed me in, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind him with a definitive, hollow sound.
Thorne adjusted his cuffs, his composure remaining unnervingly intact as he slipped his hands into his pockets. "This theatrical display is entirely unnecessary, Julian. You are unwell, and your erratic behavior tonight is only endangering your standing in the community. Let us handle this back at the estate, quietly, like civilized men."
"There is nothing civilized about what you've been doing," I said, reaching into my jacket and pulling out the stolen clinic ledger alongside the altered amber prescription bottle. I slammed both objects onto the mahogany table between us. The amber bottle rolled slightly before coming to a stop against the ledger's spine.
Thorne finally dropped his polite facade. He glanced down at the physical evidence, and the cold, calculating nature of the man was laid completely bare beneath the dim lighting. The mask of the gentle physician vanished, replaced by a hard, predatory glare. "You simple fool," Thorne murmured, his voice dropping an octave. "You think a few stolen pages and an old medicine bottle mean anything against my reputation? The board will call this the paranoid delusion of a compromised mind. Your estate, your foundation, your very life—they belong to the trust I administer. You cannot fight me."
"I'm not fighting you alone, Aris," a voice said calmly from the shadows near the private service entrance.

Marcus stepped out into the light, holding a small digital audio recorder in his hand, the red recording indicator blinking steadily. "Every word of that admission was transmitted directly to the federal prosecutor's secure server parked outside."
Thorne spun around toward the door, his face instantly draining of color as the reality of the trap closed in around him.
