Chapter 15: Stars Over the Veranda

The heavy oak front doors of the estate stood wide open to the cool autumn air, letting the evening breeze sweep through the grand hallway and chase away the last lingering ghosts of the past. The rain had cleared entirely hours ago, leaving the gravel drive glistening under a vast, star-studded sky that arched like a cathedral dome above the manicured gardens. Inside the warm, wood-paneled morning room, the ornate brass chandelier cast a soft, golden glow across the oil paintings and the polished mahogany table where everything had started weeks ago.

I sat on the velvet-upholstered settee by the tall French doors, watching Chloe sketch with a new box of colored pencils in her lap. Her long blonde hair fell over her shoulders, catching the warm light as she concentrated on drawing a tall oak tree with roots planted deep and firm in the earth. On the side table beside her sat the small black miniature flashlight, its metal casing polished and clean, resting quietly beside a stack of fairy tale books. It was no longer an instrument of secret warning in the dark; it was simply a reminder of courage, sharp observation, and an unbreakable bond forged when the world was at its most fragile.

Chloe looked up from her paper, her blue eyes bright and steady, free of the anxious shadow that had once lingered behind them. "Dad," she said, her voice carrying a sweet, melodic cadence across the quiet room. "Can we leave the garden lights on tonight so we can see the path?"

May you like

"We can leave them on as long as you like, sweetheart," I replied, crossing the room to sit beside her on the settee. I pulled her close, resting my arm around her shoulders as she leaned against my navy suit jacket with a contented sigh. The physical strength in my limbs felt absolute, every heartbeat steady and clear.

We looked out together through the wide glass doors toward the dark, whispering trees lining the perimeter of the estate. There were no hidden threats waiting in the shadows, no forged prescriptions locked in medical drawers, and no manufactured confusion clouding my mind. There was only the quiet peace of a home reclaimed, the enduring warmth of family, and a future stretching out before us, bright and entirely our own. I reached out and gently turned off the desk lamp, letting the soft glow of the chandelier and the distant, twinkling stars guide us into a quiet, unbroken night.
