Chapter 14 - THE PEOPLE WHO NEVER CAME HOMEThe underground wing contained nine occupied rooms.

Seven additional people were found beyond Julien and Claire.
Some were elderly.
Others were middle-aged.
All appeared to have been held under questionable circumstances.
Medical teams were called immediately.
Investigators secured the records and began identifying the patients.
Among them was Margaret Ellis.
The nurse who had helped Claire preserve the evidence.
She was seventy-one years old.
Weak.
Confused.
But alive.
When Sofia finally saw her parents, it was shortly after midnight.
Julien was lying on a stretcher.
Claire sat beside him.
Her hair had turned gray.
Her face was thinner.
Her hands trembled.
But her eyes were the same.
Sofia stopped in the doorway.
For twelve years, she had imagined this moment.
She had dreamed of hearing her mother's voice again.
Of feeling her arms around her.
Of asking all the questions that had haunted her childhood.
Now Claire was only a few feet away.
And Sofia couldn't move.
Claire looked up.
Her face crumpled.
“Sofia?”
Sofia took one step.
Then another.
“Mom?”
Claire stood.
They met in the middle of the room.
Sofia collapsed into her mother's arms.
Neither spoke.
They simply held each other.
Twelve years of grief.
Twelve years of birthdays.
Twelve years of empty chairs and unanswered questions.
All of it poured out in one desperate embrace.
Claire kissed Sofia's hair.
“My baby. My beautiful girl.”
Sofia sobbed.
“Why didn't you come home?”
Claire held her tighter.
“I tried.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I was afraid he'd hurt you.”
Sofia pulled back.
“You should have trusted me.”
Claire nodded through her tears.
“I know.”
There was no excuse.
No easy explanation.
Only a mother who had made terrible choices while trying to keep her children alive.
Then Elise stepped into the room.
Claire looked at her.
For a moment, she seemed unable to believe what she was seeing.
“Elise?”
Elise's face crumpled.
“Hi, Mom.”
Claire reached for her.
Elise ran into her arms.
Sofia joined them.
The three women held one another while the hospital corridor filled with the sounds of medical teams and investigators.
For the first time in twenty-three years, the family was together.
Julien watched from his stretcher.
Tears ran down his cheeks.
Sofia approached him.
He looked at her with quiet shame.
“I don't know how to ask you to forgive me.”
Sofia took his hand.
“Then don't ask yet.”
He nodded.
She looked toward Claire and Elise.
“We have time to figure that out.”
Julien closed his eyes.
For the first time that day, he smiled.
But the reunion was not the end.
At 12:46 a.m., Agent Hale entered the room.
His expression was serious.
“Adrian Keller has been located.”
Sofia stood.
“Where?”
“He was attempting to leave the hospital through a private service tunnel.”
“Did you arrest him?”
“Yes.”
Sofia exhaled.
Hale continued.
“Dr. Cross is also in custody.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Margaret Ellis had identified both men.
The original documents matched records recovered from the underground wing.
And the investigators had found additional evidence of falsified identities, unlawful confinement, and financial misconduct.
Sofia looked at her mother.
“It's over.”
Claire wanted to believe her.
But something in Hale's expression made her hesitate.
“What is it?” she asked.
Hale looked toward Julien.
“There's one more thing.”
Julien slowly opened his eyes.
Hale held up a photograph recovered from Adrian's private office.
It showed a man standing beside Claire twenty-nine years earlier.
The man looked almost identical to Julien.
But he wasn't Julien.
Sofia stared at the photograph.
“Who is that?”
Julien's face went pale.
He looked at Claire.
May you like
Then whispered:
“That's my brother. The real Victor Varenne.”
