Chapter 12 - THE GRAVE WITH NO BODYAt 9:36 p.m., Sofia stood outside Bellhaven Memorial Cemetery.

Rain fell steadily.
The gates were locked.
Beyond them, rows of headstones disappeared into darkness.
Sofia had visited this place every year of her childhood.
Every Father's Day.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas Eve.
She had brought flowers to a grave she believed held the man who had died before she was born.
Now she knew the grave was empty.
Or at least, she hoped it was.
Rachel had contacted an attorney who specialized in whistleblower cases.
The attorney, Daniel Mercer, had advised them not to disturb any burial site without legal authorization.
Instead, he arranged for an emergency preservation request and contacted an independent investigator.
But Sofia couldn't wait for paperwork to tell her what her mother had hidden.
She needed to understand the clue.
Rachel stood beside her.
“We're not opening a grave.”
“I know.”
“Then what are we looking for?”
Sofia studied the cemetery map.
“My mother said the records were inside the cemetery. Not necessarily inside the grave.”
Elise pointed toward a small stone building near the eastern wall.
“What's that?”
“The old records office,” Sofia replied. “It hasn't been used in years.”
They walked toward it.
The six dogs followed.
Atlas remained beside Sofia.
Finn moved ahead.
Shadow sniffed the walls.
Daisy searched the ground.
Ruby carried her pouch.
Bear stayed close to Elise.
At the building, Shadow stopped.
He pressed his nose against the lower wall.
Then scratched at a loose stone.
Sofia knelt.
A small brass plate was embedded in the mortar.
It bore a familiar number.
614.
She looked at Elise.
“Our birthday.”
Elise nodded.
Sofia used the key from Bear's collar.
The plate clicked open.
Behind it was a narrow compartment.
Inside lay a sealed metal cylinder.
Sofia carefully removed it.
Her hands shook.
Rachel photographed the container before anyone opened it.
Then Sofia twisted the cap.
Inside were several rolled documents wrapped in protective material.
Original patient consent forms.
Transfer orders.
Signed instructions.
And a handwritten ledger.
Rachel examined the pages.
Her expression changed.
“This is it.”
Sofia looked at her.
“The evidence?”
Rachel nodded.
“These are original records. They could establish who authorized the transfers and who falsified the reports.”
Elise pointed toward a signature.
Adrian Keller.
Another page bore the name Nathaniel Cross.
Sofia turned the ledger.
A list of payments appeared.
Dates.
Amounts.
Names.
Then she found an entry that made her stop breathing.
Claire Varenne — $250,000.
Sofia stared at the amount.
Her mother had received money from Meridian?
Elise leaned closer.
“What does that mean?”
Rachel examined the entry.
“We need to understand the context.”
Sofia turned the page.
Another payment.
Another date.
Then a note written beside Claire's name.
Cooperation secured. Child retained.
Sofia felt the world collapse.
“Mom took money?”
Elise shook her head.
“No. There has to be an explanation.”
Sofia couldn't speak.
Had Claire been part of the conspiracy?
Had she agreed to sacrifice one daughter to save the other?
Rachel reached for the ledger.
“Don't jump to conclusions. These records could be deliberately misleading.”
But Sofia barely heard her.
She stared at the words.
Child retained.
Cooperation secured.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
“Sofia?”
Sofia froze.
“Mom?”
A sob came through the phone.
“My baby.”
Sofia began crying.
“Where are you?”
“Listen to me. I don't have much time.”
“Mom, I found Elise.”
Silence.
Then Claire whispered:
“Both of you?”
“Yes.”
Claire began crying harder.
“Oh, thank God.”
Sofia gripped the phone.
“Mom, I found the records. I saw your name.”
Claire's breathing changed.
“Sofia, those payments weren't mine.”
“Then whose were they?”
“Adrian used my identity to hide money. He made it look like I accepted payment for Elise.”
Sofia closed her eyes.
“I knew you wouldn't do that.”
Claire's voice trembled.
“Sweetheart, I need you to understand something. I didn't stay away because I didn't love you. I stayed away because every time I tried to come home, Adrian threatened to hurt you.”
Sofia sobbed.
“Where are you?”
A pause.
May you like
Then Claire whispered:
“I'm beneath St. Catherine's. And your father is here with me.”
