Chapter 5: The Weight of a Secret

The kitchen fell utterly silent, save for the relentless beating of the rain against the tall windows. Brook stared down at the silver cufflink resting against her shoe. The dim chandelier light caught the intricate engraving of the family crest—the same crest that had been locked away in a legal vault for five years, declared legally defunct along with its disgraced owner.
Brook slowly crouched, her fingers closing around the metal piece. When she stood back up, her face had gone completely bloodless. The composed, aristocratic mask she wore like armor had cracked down the middle, revealing a raw, ugly terror beneath.
"Where did you find this?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the storm.
I stayed on my knees, my hands flat against the cold marble, feeling the chill seep through my black dress. "I didn't find it. It was just... there."
"Don't lie to me." Brook stepped forward, grabbing my wrist with a grip so tight her fingernails bit into my skin. Her eyes burned with a manic intensity that eclipsed even the stranger's warning. "This belongs to Julian. He's dead. He died in the fire five years ago. The coroner signed the papers, the estate was settled, and his name was erased from this house."
"People can survive fires, Miss Brook," I said, my voice hardening despite the pain in my wrist.
Brook's chest rose and fell in shallow, ragged breaths. She looked from the cufflink in her hand to my face, realization dawning with the force of a physical blow. "He's here. In this house. That's why you were standing here guarding the hallway. You let him in."
"I didn't let anyone in," I lied smoothly, looking straight into her terrified eyes. "You're imagining things, Miss Brook. It's late, the storm is playing tricks on your mind."
Brook let go of my wrist as if my skin were burning. She stumbled back a step, clutching the cufflink to her chest like a talisman against an advancing ghost. "He wants everything back," she whispered, her voice shaking violently. "He thinks he can just walk back in and take what's mine."

"He only wants the truth," I said, rising slowly to my feet, standing between her and the service exit where he had vanished into the rainy night.
Brook spun around, her eyes wide and desperate. "There is no truth. There is only what survives. And I will burn this house to the ground before I let him destroy us twice."
