Chapter 15: Breaking the Seal

Sparks showered against the concrete floor as Julian crossed two raw copper wires behind the control panel housing. With a sudden, shuddering groan, the internal locking mechanism disengaged with a mechanical shriek, and the heavy steel door popped outward half an inch, letting a rush of cool corridor air sweep into the sub-vault. Julian dropped the multi-tool, threw his shoulder against the door, and shoved it wide open, revealing the empty, dimly lit stone corridor of the wine cellar.

We didn't hesitate. Julian grabbed the black-leather ledger from the assessment table, tucked it securely beneath his wet trench coat, and we sprinted up the concrete steps toward the pantry. Pushing through the hidden cedar shelving, we emerged into the quiet, shadowy kitchen just as the grand grandfather clock in the main hallway chimed three times, signaling the deep hours of the morning before the dawn broke over the rain-soaked estate.

Brook was waiting for us at the far end of the marble hallway beneath the crystal chandelier, standing in her shiny gold silk robe with her arms crossed tightly over her chest. Two local sheriff's deputies flanked her, their hands resting casually on their holstered sidearms as they watched us step out from the kitchen threshold. Brook's face was a mask of cold triumph, her dark eyes glittering with the certainty that she had finally cornered her ghosts.

"There they are," Brook said, her voice ringing clear and hard through the vast, empty hallway. "Arrest them. They broke into the private archive and stole company property."

The deputies stepped forward, their heavy boots clicking against the polished marble floor, reaching for their cuffs. Julian didn't run. He pulled the heavy black ledger out from beneath his trench coat, held it up under the dim chandelier light, and tossed it not to Brook, but directly onto the polished wood surface of the nearest entry table, right between the two advancing officers.

"Before you put the cuffs on us, Officer," Julian said, his voice cutting through the silence with absolute authority, "you might want to open page forty-two of that ledger. It details the exact wire transfer Brook Thorne used to pay the local arson squad five years ago to burn the East Wing down with me inside it."

The leading deputy stopped dead in his tracks, his hand hovering over his belt as he looked from Julian's hardened face to the heavy ledger, and finally to Brook, whose triumphant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a sudden, ashen pallor that drained all the color from her cheeks. The rain continued to beat against the tall windows, but inside the mansion, the silence was absolute—and the truth was finally out in the open.
