Chapter 2 - Flight Through the Service Corridors

The collective gasp of the restaurant patrons dissolved into sudden, blind panic as the chandelier crystals continued to sway from the resonance of that impossible roar. The man in the black suit didn't hesitate; his hand shot down to snap the heavy brass latches of the leather briefcase, confirming the gold and diamonds within were secure before he hauled the case up onto the dark wood table. "Move," he muttered, his voice dropping into a low, urgent register that brooked no argument. I didn't wait for instructions. Whirling around, I led him away from the main dining room, bypassing the terrified host station and darting toward the discreet service exit marked by a glowing red sign. Behind us, the polite veneer of Manhattan high-society shattered into shouts and the heavy scuffle of overturned chairs. I pushed open the heavy swing door, plunging us into the stainless-steel labyrinth of the restaurant's commercial kitchen. Prep cooks and line chefs froze over copper pots and prep boards, staring at us as we cut through their domain like a pair of ghosts. "Hey! You can't—" a sous-chef started, stepping forward with a raised spatula, but the sheer intensity in the man's dark eyes silenced him instantly. We didn't slow down. I grabbed a heavy metal fire door that led directly to the service stairwell, our boots ringing out in a chaotic double-beat on the concrete steps as we descended twelve floors into the concrete belly of the building. The air grew damp and smelled of old mortar and exhaust fumes. Every echo in the stairwell sounded like heavy footsteps closing in from above, reminding us that the anomaly in the restaurant wasn't just a stray noise—it was a beacon. When we hit the ground-level exit bar, I threw my shoulder against the heavy metal door, pushing it open into the freezing, neon-streaked alleyway behind the skyscraper. Cool blue city light spilled down between the towering brick walls, casting long, fractured shadows across the slick pavement. We scrambled into the alley, gasping for cold air, our temporary escape bought only by the seconds we had stolen from our pursuers.
