Chapter 1 - The Silver Tray and the Broken Silence

The crystal chandeliers overhead hummed with a low, parasitic vibration that set the champagne glasses ringing against their stems. Around us, the upscale Manhattan restaurant hummed with the muted confidence of wealth, evening gowns rustling against dark wood tables while silver cutlery clicked in a rhythm of absolute security. No one in this room believed the world outside could touch them. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic expanse of the glowing city skyline, a grid of indifferent amber and blue lights that seemed suspended in the dark. I adjusted the stiff linen of my vintage red-and-white maid uniform, smoothing the frilled cap pinned neatly against my hair, and felt the cool burnished weight of the silver serving tray resting against my fingertips. My heart hammered a erratic cadence beneath my ribs, entirely out of step with the polite murmur of the dining room. I kept my gaze fixed on the man seated alone at the corner table. He wore a sleek black suit that caught the low-key dramatic lighting, his dark beard trimmed with precise geometry, his expression an unreadable mask of corporate composure. Before him on the polished parquet floor rested a heavy leather briefcase, locked and immovable. I stepped forward, cutting across the hushed space between tables, and planted my boots firmly on the parquet. The ambient synth drone from the restaurant's hidden speakers seemed to dip, leaving a hollow vacuum in the air just before the words left my lips. "No one can answer it," I said, my voice carrying a flat, weighted certainty that cut through the nearby chatter like a glass cutter. The surrounding patrons paused, forks suspended halfway to their mouths, their heads turning slightly in confusion. The man did not flinch, but his fingers tightened fractionally around the stem of his water glass. I stepped closer, resting my hands squarely on the silver tray, feeling its cold surface steady my trembling fingers. I looked down into his dark, guarded eyes and delivered the second half of the sequence. "You pronounced the third word correctly." He looked up sharply, his eyes widening with sudden, arrested shock. Before he could draw breath to reply, a deep, menacing monster roar echoed through the room, rattling the crystal chandeliers and turning the floor beneath us to ice.
