Chapter 8: Retreat To The Archive

Grandmother’s breathing remained slow and even, her silver-white hair fanned out across the pillows like spilled salt. She drifted back into a deep, heavy sleep, untroubled by the quiet tension that had settled over the bedroom. I watched the rise and fall of her beige nightgown for a long moment, then turned my gaze toward the doorway where Tessa stood. The young woman in the pink and white maid uniform had stepped back to give us space, her hair still neatly bundled in a bun, her posture straight despite the long hours she had kept.

I raised my right hand, flexing the dark tattoos across my knuckles, and gestured gently toward the hall. Tessa didn't flinch or ask where we were going. She simply nodded once, offering a small, steady acknowledgment before following me out of the luxury bedroom and down the private corridor that led away from the sleeping quarters.

The heavy oak doors of the security bunker hissed open as I punched the access code into the keypad. The shift from the warm amber lighting of the residence interior to the cool blue monitoring room lighting was immediate and sharp. Server equipment hummed a low, steady bass against the quiet of the late-night hours, and the wall-sized multi-monitor displays cast a pale, aquatic glow across the polished concrete floors. Outside the reinforced floor-to-ceiling windows, the city skyline stretched out in a grid of amber and neon lights, indifferent to the lives moving quietly within its towers.

I walked over to the central desk, pulling out a heavy metal-framed chair. Instead of stepping back or keeping her distance as most contracted personnel did when brought into the core control hub, Tessa walked right up to the edge of the multi-monitor displays. Her eyes tracked the glowing screens, taking in the live camera feeds of the estate perimeter, the quiet hallways, and the empty guest wings. There was no panic in her expression, no sudden tightening of her shoulders, only a calm, analytical curiosity that struck me as entirely out of place for a domestic worker hired through a standard agency.

"You aren't surprised," I said, leaning my hips against the edge of the desk and folding my arms across my unbuttoned white dress shirt. My dark wavy hair fell slightly over my forehead as I watched her profile catch the blue light of the monitors.

Tessa turned her head slowly, her gaze shifting from a feed showing the courtyard fountains back to me. "I've worked in houses where the people watching were a lot more nervous than you are," she said quietly, her voice smooth and devoid of any defensive edge. "And I've seen enough security setups to know that a man who keeps this many eyes on his family isn't doing it out of paranoia. He's doing it because he's trying to keep people safe."

"Or keep them locked away," I replied, testing the boundary of her patience.

"If she wanted to be locked away, you wouldn't have been watching her eat soup with that specific look on your face," Tessa countered, her tone remaining level. She stepped closer to the desk, looking down at the silver spoon resting near my keyboard—the exact same implement she had used upstairs. "People who want control don't look like they're trying to figure out how to bridge a distance."

I let out a slow breath, the tension in my chest loosening just a fraction. I pulled the chair out a little further, motioning for her to sit. "Sit down, Tessa."

She hesitated for a beat, her hands smoothing down the fabric of her pink uniform skirt before she finally took a seat across from me at the monitoring desk. The cool blue glow illuminated the fine lines of her face, highlighting the quiet resilience that had drawn me down to the bunker in the first place.

"You know my name from the agency files," she said, resting her hands flat on the smooth surface of the desk. "Or at least, you know the name they gave you when I was placed here three weeks ago. But the agency doesn't tell you why someone with my background takes a job feeding soup in a luxury bedroom at midnight."

"Then tell me," I said, my voice dropping to a softer tone as I leaned in across the desk. "Who are you, Tessa Miller?"
