Chapter 1: The Blue Glow Of The Monitors

The low hum of server equipment filled the small room, a steady vibration that lived just beneath the threshold of hearing. Outside the reinforced glass of the high-tech security bunker, the city skyline stretched across the night in long, blurred strokes of neon and amber, distant and entirely separate from the quiet fortress I had built for myself. But inside, right here at my desk, the world contracted until it fit entirely within the glowing multi-monitor displays arrayed in a wide, dark semicircle.
I sat motionless in my leather chair, my fingers resting loosely on the edge of the smooth mahogany surface. A crisp white dress shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, clung slightly to my skin against the cool blue monitoring room lighting. Tattoos curved darkly across my neck and wound down my forearms, stark against the fabric and the cold glow of the screens.
My gaze locked onto one feed in particular. It showed a luxury classic bedroom bathed in the warm, golden wash of a nightstand lamp. The carved wooden bed looked heavy and permanent against the polished floor. Propped up against a stack of plump white pillows, the elderly woman rested her head, her white hair catching the amber light. Her breathing was shallow, barely disturbing the beige nightgown she wore.
Beside her stood a young woman wearing a pink and white maid uniform. Her dark hair was neatly gathered in a bun at the nape of her neck, exposing the clean line of her shoulders. She held a small ceramic bowl in one hand and a silver spoon in the other, moving with a careful, measured grace that felt entirely out of place in a house dominated by corporate ledgers and closed-circuit cameras.
As I watched the feed, the young woman scooped a small portion of pale broth onto the spoon, blew on it with a gentle puff of air, and leaned down to offer it. The elderly woman hesitated, her eyelids drooping with exhaustion, before turning her head away with a faint, dry cough.
The young woman didn't force the issue. Instead, she lowered the spoon, set the bowl down on the wooden nightstand, and offered a soft, reassuring smile that reached her eyes.
"They make this stuff taste like cardboard, don't they?" she asked. Her voice drifted through the small speakers mounted beneath my monitors, clean and remarkably clear despite the distance and the compression of the intercom feed.
The warmth of the bedroom scene jarred against the sterile blue light of my bunker. A knot tightened in my chest, a sudden friction of curiosity and protective instinct that I hadn't invited into my evening routine. I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the desk, my eyes narrowing as I stared at the girl in the pink uniform.
"What are you doing in there?" I muttered to the empty room, my voice flat and low in the quiet hum of the servers.
May you like
The girl in the bedroom didn't answer my spoken question—she couldn't possibly hear me through the glass and circuitry—but she reached out, her fingers lightly brushing a stray lock of white hair from the elderly woman's forehead with a tenderness that caught me completely off guard.
The security monitor screens continued to flicker, casting their cool blue light across my face as I watched every small, deliberate movement she made. The setup was supposed to be about security, about keeping watch over the estate against external threats. But sitting here in the dark, watching the quiet intimacy unfolding under the warm amber glow of the bedside lamp, I realized the real unknown wasn't waiting outside the gates at all. It was standing right there beside the bed.
