Chapter 15 - The Pendant and the Ring

Evening settled over the city, painting the sprawling skyline in bruised shades of violet, amber, and deep navy. Up on the private penthouse balcony, high above the glittering grid of traffic and streetlamps, the air was cool and crisp with the promise of autumn. Grace was fast asleep inside her crib in the adjoining nursery, wrapped in her softest blanket, the silver circular medal necklace with its engraved figure resting safely on the bedside table beside her tiny shoes.
I stood at the glass railing, resting my hands on the cold steel, watching the distant lights flicker on across the towers of downtown. Footsteps approached softly behind me, followed by the familiar warmth of Dominic's presence as he stepped out onto the balcony, holding two crystal glasses filled with amber scotch.
He handed me one glass before stepping up beside me, leaning his hip against the railing. He looked out over the skyline for a long, quiet moment, his left hand—adorned with his watch and the heavy gold ring—resting casually near mine.
"Penny for your thoughts," Dominic said quietly, his voice a low, comforting murmur against the background hum of the distant city.
"I was just thinking about the first day in your office," I replied, a small, nostalgic smile touching the corners of my mouth. "When Grace crawled across that black leather desk and grabbed your leg. If she hadn't... I don't know where we'd be right now."
"We'd be ghosts," Dominic said without hesitation. He turned to face me fully, setting his glass down on the small stone ledge. He reached into his pocket, his expression shifting from casual ease to a profound, quiet solemnity that made my breath catch in my throat.
He didn't pull out a file or a corporate ledger. Instead, he pulled out a small, dark velvet box, flipping it open with one thumb to reveal a ring that caught the amber glow of the city lights—a platinum band set with a single, brilliant diamond flanked by two small, deep blue sapphires that matched our daughter's eyes.
"Julian gave Grace that pendant," Dominic said, his voice steady and low, filled with a raw, unshakable devotion. "And I want to give her mother something that can never be taken away."
He took my left hand in his, his fingers warm and calloused, sliding the platinum band onto my ring finger. It fit with absolute, seamless perfection, resting just below the skin where my pulse beat fast and steady.

"Stay with me, Hannah," he whispered, leaning down to press his forehead gently against mine. "Forever."
"Forever," I whispered back, closing my eyes as his lips met mine in the cool night air, the long shadows of the past finally dissolved beneath the quiet brilliance of our shared future.
