Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Name

The silence in the executive office felt heavier than the glass-and-steel framework holding up the Manhattan sky. My fingers tightened instinctively around the white cleaning cloth in my apron pocket. Across the dark executive desk with its gleaming black leather top insert, Dominic Caruso stared at me with a gaze that could cut glass. His dark hair was immaculate, his trimmed beard and mustache sharp against skin that had paled under the sudden shock. The beige suit jacket he wore suddenly looked like armor from an ancient war.

"You brought a child into my private office?" His voice was low, vibrating with a suppressed fury that made my chest tighten.

I couldn't move. Near his polished leather shoes, little Grace let out a soft, inquiring coo, her peach-orange ruffled dress rustling against the carpet. She reached tiny hands upward, completely unaware of the Richter-scale tremor her presence had just triggered in the Caruso empire. Dominic’s jaw clenched. The gold watch on his left wrist ticked against his cuff as his hand twitched toward the white call button on the desk.

"Grace, come here," he commanded, his tone shifting from disbelief to an undeniable, authoritative firmness.

The baby blinked her bright blue eyes, tilting her light brown head in confusion before taking another wobbly crawl toward his leg. Dominic didn't push her away. Instead, a muscle twitched in his cheek as he leaned forward, breaking every rule of his guarded corporate demeanor. He scooped her up in his strong arms, pulling her small, warm body close against his chest near the floor-to-ceiling windows. For a long, breathtaking second, neither of us breathed. The afternoon daylight caught the pink bow in her hair, turning it the color of a sunset I hadn't allowed myself to hope for in months.

Then his eyes locked onto the silver circular medal resting against her chest. The engraved figure on the metal caught the light. His breath hitched—a sharp, audible gasp that broke the silence of the room.

"Where did she get this?" Dominic demanded, his voice dropping an octave, raw and dangerous. "Answer me."

My throat felt dry as dust. I swallowed hard, feeling the floor tilt beneath my gray service uniform. "Her father gave it to her," I whispered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts. "His name..."

"Whose name?" he pressed, stepping closer, towering over me with the pendant clutched gently between his large fingers.

"Julian Caruso."
