Chapter 3 - The Silver Secret

As she finished the last spoonful of soup, her eyelids drooped heavily, exhaustion finally overtaking the adrenaline that had kept her going. I gently took the empty bowl from her hands and set it on the nightstand. When I turned back, I noticed for the first time the slender silver chain resting against the hollow of her throat.

It had been hidden beneath the collar of her filthy dress, but now, framed by the collar of my oversized black shirt, it caught the warm lamplight. A vintage silver locket, tarnished at the edges, hung from the chain.

My pulse spiked. I reached out slowly, my fingers brushing the cool metal. "Can I see that?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, terrified that a sudden movement would frighten her.

She didn't pull away. Instead, she reached up with her small, clean hand and pressed her thumb against the clasp, her fingers remarkably steady. "Mommy said this is my real name," she said, her tone earnest, carrying an absolute conviction that defied her young age.

With a soft click, the locket sprang open. Inside, behind a tiny clear plastic shield, was a slip of paper no larger than a postage stamp. Written in precise, elegant cursive—handwriting I would recognize anywhere, handwriting I had traced in old letters kept in a locked drawer downstairs—was a single name: *Liliana*.

The breath rushed out of my lungs. The ground beneath me seemed to tilt. The woman buried under that shiny black gravestone, the woman I had loved and lost in the shadows of a brutal world, had left a piece of herself behind. This wasn't just a stray child found in a graveyard; this was my blood. My daughter.

"Liliana," I repeated, tasting the name on my tongue like something sacred and terrifying.

She nodded sleepily, her eyelids fluttering. "Mommy gave it to me before she went to sleep in the cold dirt. She said you would find me when the time was right."

The weight of those words settled over my shoulders, heavier than any suit jacket or weapon I had ever carried. Someone had taken her, hidden her, neglected her, and tried to erase her very existence. And now, they were going to pay.
