Chapter 15 - Where the Roses Rest

The rain had cleared by afternoon, leaving the cemetery air crisp and smelling of damp pine needles and wet earth. The trees stood tall and still under a pale, breaking sky as we walked down the narrow paved path between the orderly rows of gray tombstones. Liliana walked beside me, her small hand firmly wrapped around my thumb, her leather shoes clicking softly against the stone walkway. She wasn't barefoot anymore, and her face was clean, framed by the quiet dignity of a child who finally knew where she belonged.
We stopped before the shiny black gravestone where a fresh bouquet of deep red roses sat catching the afternoon light. The framed black-and-white portrait of the woman who had loved us both gazed out serenely from the polished marble, her eyes holding the same quiet strength I now saw reflected in the girl looking up beside me.
I knelt down, resting a new bundle of red roses beside the stone, their velvet petals bright against the dark surface. Liliana crouched down next to me, carefully placing a single white daisy she had picked near the cemetery gate right beside the roses. We stayed there in silence for a long moment, the wind rustling the high branches overhead, carrying away the ghosts of the fear and the lies that had tried to bury us both.

"Mommy," Liliana whispered, her voice clear and untroubled, carrying no grief, only a sweet, quiet remembrance. "We're safe now. Mateo brought me home."
I wrapped my arm around her small shoulders, pulling her close against my side as the warmth of the afternoon sun broke through the gray clouds, bathing the cemetery in a steady, golden light. The world outside these iron gates was vast, complicated, and demanding, and the scars of what we had survived would never entirely fade. But as I looked down at the bright, living proof of a love that death and corruption could never destroy, I knew the dark days were over. We turned away from the black gravestone together, walking hand in hand down the path and out into the quiet promise of a tomorrow we would share.
