Chapter 2 - Ink and Leverage

The heavy oak door behind us rattled, and Ethan stepped back instinctively, his hand dropping from my arm just as the latch turned. We both froze, breathing heavily, trapped in the narrow space between the marble floor and the ornate wall moldings. Fortunately, it was only a catering staff member wheeling a cart of empty champagne flutes past the corridor junction. As the clinking glassware faded down the hall, I let out a shaky breath and pulled the silver fountain pen from my pocket, turning it over in my trembling fingers.
"This isn't just about feelings, Ethan, and you know it," I said, keeping my voice low as I looked up at him. The gray in his dark hair seemed starker under the harsh utility lights of the service corridor. "Your son's friends, your business associates—they're all watching us right now. Every second we spend out here together adds fuel to the fire."
Ethan crossed his arms over his chest, his eyes locking onto the silver pen in my hand. "Where did you get that?"
"You know where," I replied quietly. "Your lead counsel gave it to me when I started auditing the Moretti Foundation accounts six months ago. He told me to sign the compliance reports and look the other way on the missing architectural funds."
Ethan's expression darkened, the lines around his mouth deepening into a harsh scowl. "I didn't authorize any diversion of foundation funds."
"I know you didn't," I said, stepping closer to him, emboldened by the shared danger. "That's why I refused to sign. That's why Noah thought marrying me would keep me quiet, tie me to the family so I'd have too much to lose to speak up."
Ethan stared at me for a long, agonizing moment, the stern patriarch melting away to reveal the tactical mind assessing a massive breach in his empire. "You rejected him to protect yourself from the audit fallout."
May you like
"I rejected him because I couldn't be bought," I corrected sharply, my tears finally drying into fierce resolve. "And because every time I sat across the boardroom table from you, trying to balance your ledgers, all I could hear was you defending transparency while your own people undermined you."
Ethan reached out, his warm fingers brushing against my knuckles as he carefully took the silver fountain pen from my grip. His touch sent a violent shiver down my spine. "You have more courage than anyone I've hired in a decade, Olivia. And it's going to get you killed if we aren't careful."
