Chapter 13 - Echoes in the Marble Hall

Within an hour, the boardroom had emptied of its disgraced directors. Federal agents escorted Richard Vance out through the side service elevators, his hands cuffed behind his back, his expensive suit jacket rumpled and defeated. The grand ballroom downstairs, usually reserved for charity galas and society celebrations, echoed with the hollow emptiness of a battlefield after the smoke had cleared.

Ethan and I walked side by side across the vast marble floor, the bright crystal chandelier lighting catching the scattered white floral columns. The guests were gone, the gossip had scattered to the winds of the downtown evening news, and for the first time in months, the air felt entirely our own.

Ethan stopped near the center of the room, turning to face me. The stern, commanding edge that had defined him during our first confrontation in this exact spot had melted away, leaving only the raw, unguarded man beneath the black suit jacket and neck tattoos.

"You realize what happens now, don't you?" Ethan asked softly, his gaze intense yet tender. "The foundation is safe, Vance is behind bars, and my name—our name—is going to be dragged through every tabloid in the state tomorrow morning."

I reached into my pocket, pulling out the silver fountain pen and holding it out toward him. "I stopped running from the truth a long time ago, Ethan. I'm not starting now."

He didn't take the pen. Instead, he reached out, wrapping his warm fingers over my hand, gently folding my fingers around the metal barrel and pressing both of our hands against his chest. I could feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath the black silk shirt.

"Good," he murmured, leaning down so his forehead rested against mine. "Because I spent fifty-two years building walls around myself, thinking duty and survival were enough. And then you walked into my life and refused to let me live a lie."

A profound sense of peace settled deep into my bones. The danger had passed, the corporate war was won, and the secrets that had threatened to tear us apart had instead forged an unbreakable bond.

"I love you, Ethan," I whispered, the words no longer hidden behind polite distance or desperate glances, but spoken with the absolute certainty of a woman who had finally found home.

Ethan’s arms wrapped tightly around my waist, lifting me just slightly as his lips met mine in a fierce, breathless confirmation of everything we had survived.
