Chapter 10: The Hidden Safe

The afternoon light slanted through the large windows of the luxury bedroom, cutting bright, dusty stripes across the neutral carpeting. The house had grown unusually quiet. The blonde woman in the teal dress had taken the sedan down to the county road for supplies, leaving a thin window of time before she returned to resume her watchful surveillance. I stood near the dark wooden four-poster bed with a soft flannel cloth and a tin of lemon-oil polish, working methodically along the polished wood paneling that lined the lower half of the walls.

My movements were deliberate, though my mind remained fixed on the weight of what I had learned the day before. The silver bullet casing tucked beneath the mattress and the subtle, sharp reactions of the man in the wheelchair had dismantled any remaining illusion that this estate was simply a quiet refuge for a wealthy recovery. There was a history here—one buried just as carefully as the evidence I kept uncovering.

I worked my way down the western wall, where the polished wainscoting met the base of the heavy draperies. As I buffed a circular smudge near the corner, my elbow brushed against a vertical seam in the wood. It was a precise joint, fitted so tightly that the grain of the walnut seemed to flow seamlessly across the break. Yet when the afternoon light hit the surface at a sharp angle, I noticed a hairline shadow that didn't belong to the natural pattern of the timber.

I stopped polishing and set the cloth down on the floor. Kneeling on the neutral carpet, I pressed my fingertips against the grain. There was no visible handle, no keyhole, and no brass latch. But as I ran my thumb along the vertical seam and applied a firm, testing pressure to the upper quadrant of the panel, a small click echoed in the quiet room.

A section of the wood paneling—roughly eighteen inches square—pivoted inward on hidden brass hinges, releasing a faint whiff of stale air and cold metal.

Inside the cavity cut directly into the drywall and masonry of the estate's foundation sat a small digital wall safe. Its dark gray keypad was dark, the electronic display unlit, waiting for a combination I did not possess. Surrounding the safe, the hollow space in the wall offered just enough room to store a stack of heavy manila folders, their edges gray with dust.

I stared at the metal box, my heart picking up a steady, heavy beat against my ribs. This was the core of it—the archive behind the veneer of polished wood and quiet luxury.

Before I could reach out to touch the edge of the nearest folder, the sharp crunch of gravel drifted up from the driveway below. Car tires hummed to a halt near the front entrance, followed by the familiar, heavy slam of the sedan door. The blonde woman was back, cutting her errand short.

Panic, cold and sharp, replaced my hesitation. I pushed the heavy wood panel back into place with the palm of my hand. It swung smoothly, latching with a soft, definitive click that vanished into the ambient room tone just as footsteps began to echo across the foyer downstairs.

"Is everything quiet up there?" the blonde woman's voice called up the stairwell, clear and carrying a thin edge of suspicion.

May you like

I grabbed the flannel cloth from the floor, my hands steadying by an act of sheer will, and called back down toward the hallway, my voice level. "Just finishing the woodwork."

I stood up, wiping a trace of lemon oil from my fingers, knowing the safe was there, waiting behind the wall.
