Chapter 1: The Weight of the Metal Beneath the Mattress

The afternoon light filtered through the large window of the master bedroom, casting a pale, natural glare across the neutral carpeting and the polished wood paneling. I knelt on the floor beside the wheelchair, holding the white towel in my hands. The man in the chair sat shirtless, his dark beard and short dark hair catching the light, his dark shorts resting loosely against his frame. In the background, standing near the large dark wooden four-poster bed, the blonde woman in the teal dress watched our movements with a steady, unblinking stillness.

I leaned forward to finish wiping the damp linen across the man's shins, my movements practiced and unhurried. The fabric of my pink uniform with its crisp white collar rustled quietly against the carpet as I shifted my weight. The only sounds in the spacious luxury bedroom were the soft splashing of water in the ceramic bowl beside me and the faint, low hum of the ambient room tone.

As I straightened my posture to place the damp towel into the basin, my fingers grazed the lower hem of the heavy mattress where it met the dark wooden frame of the bed. Something caught. It wasn't the soft give of standard upholstery or the smooth edge of ticking. It was a hard, distinct ridge tucked just out of sight beneath the wool-blend fabric.

I paused mid-motion. My eyes shifted downward toward the shadowed gap between the box spring and the mattress. The silence in the room seemed to thicken, pressing in from the corners of the wood-paneled walls.

Without thinking, my hand slid further under the edge of the fabric. My fingertips brushed against cold, machined brass and lead before hooking around a small, cylindrical object. I pulled it out into the daylight.

It was a silver metal bullet casing, no longer than my top knuckle, catching the pale afternoon rays on its dull, polished surface.

My eyes widened as I stared down at the object gripped between my fingers. The sheer incongruity of it—sitting hidden in a sprawling, high-end estate bedroom where every surface spoke of immaculate order and curated safety—sent a sudden jolt through my chest. The weight of the small piece of metal felt entirely disproportionate to its size.

I didn't dare look up right away, but the change in the room's atmosphere was instantaneous. I could feel the sudden shift in focus. The man in the wheelchair stopped shifting his hands in his lap, his muscles tensing beneath his skin as he sensed the abrupt halt in my routine. Across the room, near the four-poster bed, the blonde woman in the teal dress took half a step forward, her posture tightening into a defensive guard.

My breath caught in my throat. Keeping my hand low, away from their immediate line of sight, I quickly slid the casing deep into the pocket of my pink uniform, pressing my fingers against the fabric to anchor it against my thigh. When I finally raised my head, my face remained blank, shielding the sudden panic taking root inside me. The three of us remained frozen in place, bound together by an unspoken tension that none of us knew how to break.
