Chapter 9 - The Digital Trail

I backed away from the hospital bed as the heavy wooden door pushed open, revealing a tired-looking night nurse carrying a clipboard rather than hospital security. I slipped past her into the shadowed corridor, clutching my coat tightly around my shoulders to hide the violent tremor in my hands. Person B’s last whispered words echoed in my mind over and over again—not a remote cloud server, but a local hardware rig tucked safely inside the router box. It meant the raw, unedited footage, complete with audio and uncorrupted timestamps, still sat somewhere within the massive, sprawling digital network of Location X. Marcus thought he had thoroughly purged the surveillance system from his private terminal in the study, but he didn't understand the physical architecture of the house. He didn't know about the hardwired secondary node installed behind the pantry wall during the extensive kitchen remodel two years ago, a redundant backup system meant to protect his corporate assets from local power surges or intentional tampering.

I drove back through the quiet, rain-slicked streets of the deserted suburbs just as the first cold gray light of dawn began to bleed over the horizon. The luxury dining room was empty and eerily cold when I let myself in through the heavy side service entrance. The shattered glass on the round glass dining table had been partially swept aside by the early morning domestic staff, leaving jagged, razor-sharp remnants glittering under the unlit crystal chandelier. I ignored the chilling wreckage of the previous night and headed straight for the pantry, my fingers flying frantically over the rusted screws of the plastic access panel set low against the baseboard.

Inside the dark alcove sat a small, unmarked black metal box with a quiet hum and a steady amber light. A custom data tether ran from its port directly into the home’s main router. I unhooked the solid-state drive with trembling fingers, sliding the rectangular device into my coat pocket just as the distant sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the main hallway. Marcus was up early, preparing for the fallout of the hospital investigation and the impending foundation crisis. I slipped out the back door into the cold morning air, my heart hammering against my ribs, knowing I finally held the physical key to destroying his carefully constructed public lie.
