Chapter 13 - The Breakpoint

The silence in the private salon snapped like dry kindling. For a single, frozen second, Marcus stared at the detective, his carefully constructed mask of corporate infallibility finally fracturing, revealing the desperate, cornered predator underneath. His eyes darted past Miller to me, a flash of pure, unadulterated hatred burning in his gaze. He realized then that all his money, his lawyers, and his high-end social status couldn't save him from the digital trap he had inadvertently helped build.

"You stupid bitch," Marcus hissed, lunging past the security guards toward me with his hands outstretched, his fingers clawing the air as if he intended to finish what he started under the crystal chandelier.

Detective Miller moved instantly, intercepting Marcus's charge and slamming him hard against the wood-paneled wall, twisting his arm behind his back with practiced efficiency. One of the private security guards stepped forward to intervene, but Miller drew his firearm, leveling it square at the guard's chest. "Step back! NYPD! Stand down or you're going downtown as an accessory!"

The guard hesitated, his hands going up slowly as he looked between the drawn weapon and his struggling employer. Taking advantage of the chaos, I slipped past them out into the hallway, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. I couldn't stay in the shadows anymore. If Marcus was going down, I was going to make sure the entire world saw the exact truth of what happened under that roof.

I walked rapidly back toward the grand ballroom, my red velvet gown sweeping dramatically against the marble floor. As I pushed open the double doors, the string quartet was still playing, and the wealthy elite were still sipping their champagne, completely oblivious to the storm raging just off-stage. I marched straight up to the high-tech AV control booth overlooking the main floor, brushing past a startled sound technician.

Before anyone could stop me, I pulled Julian's flash drive from my clutch, jammed it into the main console port, and hit the master override key.

Instantly, the massive projector screens above the stage flickered, cutting away from the foundation's glowing promotional slides. In their place, the crystal-clear, unedited high-definition footage from the dining room dome camera began to play across the giant monitors for the entire room to see. The audio echoed through the grand ballroom's massive speakers, carrying every harsh word, every gasp, and every devastating detail of Marcus's premeditated setup.

Gasps rippled through the glittering crowd as the elite of the city stopped drinking, stopped talking, and stared up in horror at the screens. Camera flashbulbs immediately began to pop like blinding lightning as reporters in the back of the room scrambled to capture the unfolding catastrophe. Within moments, the heavy doors of the ballroom burst open, and a swarm of local police officers flooded the room, their boots echoing sharply against the floor as they moved toward the stage to secure the building once and for all.
