Chapter 9: The Perimeter Gate

The morning air carried the sharp, damp chill of early spring as I stood by the front gates of my middle school, waiting for Marcus's silver sedan to pull up to the curb. Ever since the night of the ruined wedding and the subsequent discovery of Danielle's financial fraud, our daily routine had tightened into something resembling a security detail. Marcus had insisted on walking me right up to the administrative doors every morning and picking me up from the exact same spot every afternoon.

A sleek black SUV idling near the bus stop caught my eye. The tinted passenger window slid down an inch, and a familiar face peered out through the gap. Danielle. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe chignon, and she wore a heavy wool trench coat that seemed too large for her frame. She didn't look like the radiant bride from the reception hall anymore; she looked desperate, her eyes darting nervously toward the school entrance.

Before I could turn around and head back inside the lobby, the SUV door swung open and Danielle stepped onto the sidewalk, ignoring the No Parking signs and the crossing guard's warning whistle.

"Chloe! Wait, please, just give me a minute," Danielle called out, hurrying across the asphalt with her heels clicking sharply against the pavement.

My heart hammered against my ribs, and every instinct screamed at me to run. I backed up toward the glass doors, my hand gripping the strap of my backpack so tightly my knuckles turned white.

"Stay away from her!"

Marcus's voice cut through the morning noise like a gunshot. His sedan had pulled up diagonally across the lane, blocking the SUV's exit. Marcus killed the engine, burst out of the driver's side door, and closed the distance between us in long, furious strides. He stepped directly between Danielle and me, his broad shoulders forming an absolute wall.

"You're in violation of the temporary restraining order, Danielle," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly quiet and controlled. "If you take one more step toward my daughter, I'll have the marshals pick you up before lunch."

Danielle stopped dead in her tracks, her chest heaving as she stared up at him with a mixture of rage and pleading. "Marcus, please. We need to talk. Your lawyer is freezing every account I have. I can't even pay my legal retainers. You can't do this to me in public."

"I didn't do anything," Marcus replied coldly, gesturing toward the school security cameras mounted above the doors. "You did this to yourself when you decided to use a secret phone and drain our future. Get back in your car, Danielle. Let the courts handle it."

Marcus turned, grabbed my hand gently, and guided me past the glass doors into the safety of the hallway, leaving Danielle standing alone on the sidewalk as the morning bell rang.
