Chapter 12: Marble Steps

The morning of the preliminary hearing arrived with a biting wind that whipped across the wide marble steps of the county courthouse, carrying the distinct chill of early autumn. Press photographers and local reporters lingered near the main entrance, their heavy camera lenses catching the pale morning light as people filed steadily through the security scanners and into the grand municipal building.

Marcus stepped out of the black sedan first, his dark wool coat buttoned to the chin against the cold air, turning to offer me a steady hand as I climbed out onto the pavement. We walked side by side toward the towering courthouse doors, flanked by Arthur Vance and a sharp-eyed junior associate who carried a heavy rolling briefcase packed with our comprehensive financial and digital evidence.

As we approached the grand stone columns, a sudden commotion near the press barrier drew the immediate attention of the gathered crowd. Danielle and her new, court-appointed defense attorney were aggressively pushing through the media blockade, hounded by shouted questions about embezzlement allegations and the sudden dissolution of her high-society marriage. Danielle looked utterly exhausted, her face pale beneath a layer of heavy powder, her eyes entirely avoiding the flashing camera lights that had once brought her such immense joy.

She stopped for a fraction of a second as our paths intersected near the top of the stone steps, desperate to find an opening in our defensive formation. Her gaze locked onto mine across the short distance, filled with a frantic, pleading vulnerability that she had never once displayed during the height of her calculated deception.

"Chloe..." Danielle whispered, her voice trembling slightly in the biting wind as she took half a step forward.

Marcus didn't break his stride, nor did he let go of my hand for even a single second. He stepped smoothly between us, cutting off her line of sight entirely, and guided me past the heavy oak doors and into the quiet warmth of the security checkpoint.

"Keep walking, Chloe," Marcus said quietly, his voice devoid of any lingering anger, operating purely on a plane of total, unshakeable indifference. "We have nothing left to say to her."

Inside the expansive marble lobby, the harsh noise of the city and the press faded away completely, replaced by the hushed whispers of attorneys and plaintiffs waiting for their dockets to be called. We took our seats on the polished wooden benches outside Courtroom 3B, watching the digital docket screen flash with case numbers and hearing times. The illusion of Danielle's immaculate social facade was gone, replaced by reality.
