Chapter 9 - The Unwelcome Arrival

The morning after the storm dawned crisp and clear, the winter sun turning the wet pine needles outside the cottage windows into a blinding expanse of diamond dust. I was standing at the small kitchen counter chopping fresh herbs for breakfast when the crunch of heavy tires on gravel broke the morning stillness. Two sleek black sedans—foreign to these quiet northern roads—turned into the narrow drive and came to a sharp halt near the porch.

I dropped the knife and wiped my hands on my apron, stepping quickly toward the front window. Nicholas had already emerged from the study down the hall, his jacket pulled on over his white shirt, his expression hardening into the icy, impenetrable mask of a corporate titan.

"Who is it?" I asked, though the sinking feeling in my chest already supplied the answer.

"Julian," Nicholas said coldly, buttoning his cuffs with sharp, mechanical jerks. "And two members of the board. They tracked us down."

Before Nicholas could reach the front door, it swung open. Julian Vance stepped into the warm entryway, flanked by an older, gray-haired man in an expensive cashmere overcoat. Julian’s gaze swept over the rustic interior of the cottage with undisguised contempt before landing on Nicholas.

"Playing woodcutter, Nicholas?" Julian asked with a thin, sharp smile. "The board meeting was supposed to begin an hour ago in the city. The stock is down three points because rumors are swirling that you’ve abandoned corporate headquarters to hide out in the woods with an elderly woman and a domestic worker."

Nicholas stepped into the entryway, blocking Julian's path before he could take another step toward the sitting room where his mother was still resting. "You trespass on private property, Julian, and you speak of my mother with a disrespect that will cost you your seat on the board by noon."

"You can't threaten us, Nicholas," the older man behind Julian interjected, his voice gravelly and authoritative. "We represent sixty percent of the voting shares. If you don't return to the city today to manage this PR crisis, we will file an emergency petition for guardianship of your mother and freeze every corporate account tied to this estate."

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bone. Nicholas didn't flinch, didn't blink; his jaw tightened until the muscle ticked visibly beneath his skin. He reached down instinctively, his fingers brushing the gold tie clip on his chest—a grounding anchor in the middle of a rising storm.

"File your petition," Nicholas said, his voice dropping into a register so quiet and lethal that even Julian took an involuntary step back. "And by tomorrow morning, every single illegal asset transfer you've orchestrated over the last three years will be sitting on the desk of the federal prosecutor. Get out of this house."
