Chapter 10 - Frozen Accounts and Quiet Resolve

The sedans vanished down the gravel drive as quickly as they had appeared, leaving behind a silence that felt heavier than the storm of the previous night. Nicholas stood in the center of the sitting room for a long time after they left, staring out the frost-rimed window at the distant tree line. His shoulders were rigid, the fierce tension of the confrontation still vibrating through his frame.
I walked out from the kitchen carrying a fresh cup of black coffee, setting it quietly on the wooden table beside his hand. "They weren't bluffing about the accounts, were they?"
"No," Nicholas said, not turning around. "As of ten minutes ago, my personal credit cards and corporate lines of credit have been frozen pending an emergency injunction. We have whatever cash is currently in the house, and nothing else."
"Then we live on what we have," I said calmly, leaning against the edge of the wooden table. "There's wood for the fire, food in the pantry for two weeks, and Helen is safe. Everything else is just numbers on a screen."
Nicholas turned slowly, his dark eyes searching my face with a mixture of profound exhaustion and raw, unfiltered awe. He reached out, his fingers wrapping firmly around my wrist, pulling me a step closer until I could feel the heat radiating from his chest through his unbuttoned vest.
"You aren't afraid?" he asked, his voice rough. "I might lose everything I've spent the last fifteen years building."
May you like
"You built an empire to protect yourself from feeling," I answered, looking directly into his tear-bright eyes without hesitation. "Maybe losing it is the only way you get to keep what actually matters."
Nicholas lifted his free hand, his fingertips brushing a stray lock of hair away from my face with an impossible gentleness, lingering for a breathless second against my cheek before his thumb traced the edge of my jawline. The kitchen clock ticked softly in the background, measuring out a world where corporate empires crumbled while two people stood quietly in the warmth of a northern stone cottage, bound by a secret they could no longer outrun.
