Chapter 15: Not Alone Anymore

Evening settled over the courtyard as the automated fountain lights flickered on, casting a warm, amber glow across the manicured marble paths and the gathered crowd of families, doctors, and supporters. The air was warm with the promise of a Los Angeles summer evening, untainted by fear or secrets.
I stood at the top of the wide marble steps leading into the main hall, my hand resting lightly on the polished stone balustrade. Leo stood a few paces to my right, looking out over the crowded terrace with an easy, relaxed posture that had been entirely foreign to him weeks ago.
Marcus walked up the steps, carrying a leather portfolio under one arm, and offered us both a quiet nod before joining the group near the entrance. "The evening news broadcast just aired the final segment on the foundation restructuring," Marcus said, his voice laced with quiet satisfaction. "Arthur’s defense team didn't even file for bail. The financial evidence is airtight."
"Good," I said, my voice steady and clear as I took a deep, unhindered breath of the evening breeze.
I looked out at the people gathered below—patients who would receive honest care, researchers who would pursue truth without corporate interference, and a boy who had reminded me that the human spirit could not be permanently paralyzed by cruelty. The past was buried beneath undeniable facts and legal accountability, but the future belonged entirely to the choices we made right now.
I stepped forward, my legs moving with fluid, effortless strength down the wide marble staircase, refusing to look back at the shadows of the doorway behind us. Leo fell into step beside me, matching my pace effortlessly as we walked out into the warm, open light of the courtyard together.
I looked down at him, a quiet, abiding peace settling deep into my chest.

"You're not alone anymore," I whispered, repeating the words he had once given back to me when I needed them most.
Leo smiled, his eyes bright in the amber fountain light, and shook his head. "Neither are you, Evelyn. Neither are you."
