Chapter 12: Handcuffs Under the Pier

The wailing sirens multiplied, echoing off the jagged cliffs and bouncing across the open expanse of the Pacific shoreline. Arthur froze mid-motion, his head snapping toward the front windows as flashing red and blue lights painted the rustic wooden walls in rapid, chaotic pulses. He turned back toward me, panic finally piercing the armor of his absolute control.
"You called them," Arthur hissed, stepping backward toward the front door as the heavy crunch of boots on gravel signaled the arrival of federal vehicles outside. "You absolute fool, you've destroyed everything we built."
"I destroyed what you stole," I answered, standing tall as the heavy oak door swung completely open under the push of a federal marshal's hand.
Two agents in dark tactical windbreakers stepped into the room, their eyes sweeping the space before locking onto Arthur. The lead agent, a woman with sharp graying hair and an unyielding expression, pulled a set of steel cuffs from her belt.
"Arthur Vance? I'm Special Agent Miller, federal task force on foundation fraud. Step away from Mrs. Vance with your hands where we can see them."
Arthur’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson. He raised his hands, his fingers twitching with suppressed fury, but as the agent stepped forward, Arthur made a fatal tactical error. He lunged backward toward the doorway, attempting to push past the federal agent while reaching into his inner suit pocket.
"You don't understand who I am!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with desperate rage as he slapped at the agent's extended arm. "I can make phone calls that will bury your careers before the sun sets! Name your price, take whatever check you want—"
The second the bribe left his lips, it was picked up clearly by the pinned tactical audio recorders on the agents' collars. The lead agent didn't hesitate. She slammed Arthur against the wooden doorframe with practiced efficiency, pinning his arms behind his back as the heavy steel cuffs clicked shut around his wrists.

"Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for interstate financial fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy," Agent Miller recited crisply, reading him his rights as he struggled against the grip.
I watched silently from the center of the room as they hauled him out onto the porch. He threw one final, venomous glare over his shoulder, but the fear in his eyes was unmistakable. As the police cruiser doors slammed shut and the vehicle reversed down the narrow coastal road, the physical weight that had crushed my chest for five long years simply evaporated. I took a deep, shuddering breath of the salt air, my legs completely steady beneath me.
