Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THE VALMONT EMPIRE FELL

Sofia stared at the screen.

Detective Bennett sat tied to a chair behind Vivian.

His face was bruised.

His eyes were open.

He was alive.

But the clock on the wall showed only two minutes until midnight.

Vivian smiled.

“Time is running out, Isabella.”

Sofia forced herself to breathe.

“What do you want?”

“I want you to come inside.”

“Why?”

“Because you owe me a conversation.”

Sofia felt anger rise.

“I owe you nothing.”

Vivian's smile disappeared.

“You owe me your life.”

Sofia shook her head.

“No.”

Vivian leaned closer.

“I could have had you killed twenty-two years ago.”

Sofia's voice became steady.

“And you didn't. That doesn't make you my savior.”

Vivian's expression hardened.

“You sound like Claire.”

Sofia lifted her chin.

“I'm proud of that.”

The call ended.

Sofia turned toward Adrien.

He stood beside the surveillance vehicle, pale with fear.

“You are not going in there.”

Sofia looked at him.

“Bennett is inside.”

“The police will get him out.”

“They're trying.”

Adrien gripped her shoulders.

“I just got you back.”

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“I can't lose you again.”

She embraced him.

For a moment, she was the little girl he had searched for.

Then she stepped back.

“You won't.”

Bennett's deputy, Lieutenant Rachel Morgan, approached.

“We have a plan.”

Sofia listened carefully.

The police had surrounded the lake house.

Officers had identified two possible entrances.

A tactical team was preparing to move.

But Vivian had positioned Bennett near a window and threatened to kill him if she saw police.

Morgan needed time.

Sofia looked toward the house.

“Then let me talk to her.”

Adrien shook his head.

“No.”

Morgan considered the request.

“You can speak through the phone. You are not entering without our control.”

Sofia nodded.

“Okay.”

She called Vivian.

The woman answered immediately.

“Are you coming?”

Sofia looked toward the lake house.

“I want to know why.”

Vivian laughed.

“Why what?”

“Why you hated my mother.”

Vivian's expression changed.

“I didn't hate Claire.”

“You imprisoned her.”

“She tried to destroy me.”

“She tried to stop you from stealing.”

Vivian's eyes narrowed.

Sofia continued.

“You were wealthy. Educated. Powerful. You had every opportunity to build something good.”

Vivian said nothing.

“But you chose to hurt people.”

Vivian's voice rose.

“You don't understand what it was like growing up in that family!”

Sofia felt a surge of anger.

“I grew up hungry.”

Vivian stopped.

Sofia continued.

“I slept in apartments without heat. I wore shoes with holes in them. I sold candy because I needed money for food.”

Her voice trembled.

“And I never kidnapped anyone.”

Vivian stared at her.

Sofia wiped her eyes.

“You had everything I dreamed of. And you still wanted more.”

Vivian's face twisted.

“You think money was the problem?”

“No.”

Sofia took a breath.

“I think you couldn't stand being told no.”

Vivian slammed her hand against the table.

“You know nothing about me!”

Sofia looked directly into the camera.

“I know you murdered Margaret Ellis.”

Vivian froze.

“I know you stole me.”

Silence.

“I know you kept my mother locked away.”

Vivian's breathing quickened.

“And I know you lied to Daniel.”

For the first time, Vivian looked frightened.

Sofia continued.

“But here's what you don't understand.”

Vivian stared at her.

“You didn't destroy us.”

Sofia's voice strengthened.

“You hurt us. You stole years from us. You made us afraid.”

Tears streamed down her face.

“But you didn't destroy us.”

Vivian's expression collapsed.

For a brief moment, she looked like an exhausted woman rather than a powerful criminal.

Then she reached toward Bennett.

Sofia's heart stopped.

“Vivian, wait!”

The woman pulled a handgun from her coat.

Sofia screamed.

But before Vivian could raise it, a loud crash echoed through the lake house.

The tactical team breached a rear entrance.

Officers shouted commands.

Vivian spun around.

The phone fell.

Sofia heard struggling.

A gunshot.

Then silence.

She stared at the screen.

“Dad?”

Adrien wrapped an arm around her.

“Stay here.”

Seconds felt like hours.

Finally, Morgan's radio crackled.

“Suspect secured. Hostage alive.”

Sofia collapsed into Adrien's arms.

Vivian had been arrested.

Bennett had survived.

The nightmare was ending.

But there was one final truth waiting inside the lake house.

Investigators found an old recording device hidden in Charles Valmont's study.

It contained an audio recording made the night he died.

Charles had confronted Vivian about the financial network.

He had threatened to report her.

Vivian had shouted.

Then came the sound of a struggle.

Charles gasped.

And Vivian said:

“You should have left it alone, Father.”

The recording ended.

Investigators later recovered medical evidence suggesting Charles had been poisoned with a medication that could trigger a fatal cardiac event.

Vivian had not only destroyed her brother's family.

She had likely killed her own father.

When Eleanor heard the recording, she broke down.

For years, she had mourned a husband whose death she believed was natural.

Now she learned that the daughter she had protected might have been responsible.

Adrien held her.

Sofia stood nearby.

For the first time, she saw Eleanor not as a wealthy matriarch but as a grieving mother.

A woman who had made terrible mistakes.

A woman who had lost nearly everything.

And a woman who would now have to live with the truth.

The following morning, Vivian appeared before a federal judge.

She faced numerous charges, including kidnapping, conspiracy, financial crimes, witness intimidation, and murder-related offenses.

The investigation into the wider child-trafficking and identity-fraud network continued.

Several associates were arrested.

Others began cooperating.

The Valmont family surrendered relevant records and established an independent fund to support victims.

Adrien stepped down from several business positions while investigators reviewed the company's history.

Eleanor publicly acknowledged her role in the decisions that had helped Vivian conceal Isabella's disappearance.

And Sofia returned to the hospital to see Daniel.

He was sitting upright when she entered.

His face brightened.

“Hey, big sister.”

Sofia laughed.

“Little brother.”

Daniel smiled.

“Did they catch her?”

Sofia nodded.

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he began crying.

Sofia sat beside him.

“It's over.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not for everyone.”

Sofia looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

He reached beneath his pillow.

He handed her a small notebook.

“I remembered something about the files.”

Sofia opened it.

Inside were handwritten names.

Dates.

Locations.

And a symbol repeated beside several entries.

Three flowers arranged in a spiral.

The same design embroidered on the golden dress.

Sofia stared at the symbol.

“Daniel?”

He looked at her.

“Vivian used that symbol to identify children connected to the network.”

Sofia felt cold.

“The dress?”

Daniel nodded.

“She used the design long before you disappeared.”

Sofia stared at the notebook.

Then she noticed one name written near the bottom.

A name she recognized.

Ruth Mercer.

Beside it was a date from three months earlier.

And one word.

ALIVE.

Sofia looked up.

May you like

Because Ruth had disappeared before the investigation began.

And if the notebook was accurate, the woman who had raised her was still out there.
