Chapter 13 - THE LAST SECRET OF VIVIAN VALMONT

Bennett ordered Eleanor moved to a secure location.

Adrien protested.

“She shouldn't have to hide.”

Bennett looked at him.

“Your sister has already arranged multiple violent attacks.”

Adrien clenched his jaw.

“She's not my sister anymore.”

Eleanor sat quietly beside the window.

For days, she had watched the truth about Vivian unfold.

The financial crimes.

The kidnapping.

The murder.

The years of manipulation.

And now the evidence that Vivian had helped conceal the identities of other missing children.

Eleanor had spent her life believing family loyalty was sacred.

Now she understood that loyalty without accountability could become a form of cruelty.

She looked toward Sofia.

“I want to help.”

Adrien shook his head.

“Mother, you're already in danger.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I know.”

“Then let the police handle it.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“I spent twenty-two years letting other people handle things.”

Her voice trembled.

“And look what happened.”

Sofia sat beside her.

“What do you want to do?”

Eleanor took a deep breath.

“I want to tell investigators everything I remember about Vivian's finances, her associates, and the people she brought into this house.”

Bennett nodded.

“That would help.”

Eleanor continued.

“And I want to make a public statement.”

Adrien frowned.

“Mother.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“For years, our family name protected Vivian. People trusted her because she was a Valmont.”

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

“It's time that name stood for something better.”

Sofia squeezed her hand.

The following morning, Eleanor met with federal investigators.

She provided access to family records, old correspondence, trust documents, and archived business files.

She also acknowledged her own role in signing the temporary placement paperwork that had helped Vivian remove Isabella.

The admission was painful.

It could expose her to legal scrutiny.

But Eleanor refused to hide.

“I made a terrible mistake,” she told investigators. “I believed my daughter when I should have demanded evidence.”

She paused.

“And I allowed fear to silence me.”

The investigator asked:

“Why are you telling us this now?”

Eleanor looked toward Sofia.

“Because my granddaughter spent twenty-two years paying for my silence.”

Meanwhile, Daniel continued recovering.

His condition improved slowly.

He gave investigators detailed testimony about Vesper Holdings.

He identified several people who had helped Vivian move money and conceal records.

He also revealed that Vivian had maintained a hidden archive.

A collection of original documents she used to control associates.

The archive was stored in a private vault beneath an abandoned resort in the Catskill Mountains.

Bennett organized a search operation.

Investigators entered the property with a warrant.

Inside the vault, they found boxes of records.

Photographs.

Birth certificates.

Medical files.

Financial ledgers.

And handwritten notes documenting payments to intermediaries.

The evidence was overwhelming.

But Vivian herself remained missing.

Then investigators discovered a letter addressed to Sofia.

It had been placed inside a sealed envelope.

Bennett brought it to the mansion.

Sofia opened it with trembling hands.

The letter was written in Vivian's elegant handwriting.

Dear Isabella,

You have always been more troublesome than you realize.

When you were three, you refused to forget what you saw.

When you were a child, you kept asking questions.

And now, as an adult, you have returned to destroy everything I built.

You think this is about money.

It never was.

It was about power.

Your father inherited everything because he was born first. I was expected to smile, marry well, and be grateful.

I refused.

Claire discovered my financial arrangements and threatened to expose me. Margaret Ellis found the evidence. And you saw what happened when Margaret confronted me.

I did not intend for her to die.

But once she was dead, I could not allow a three-year-old child to destroy my future.

Sofia stopped reading.

Her hands shook.

Adrien stood beside her.

“Do you want me to finish?”

Sofia shook her head.

“No.”

She continued.

I arranged for you to disappear.

I told myself you would be safe.

And perhaps you were safer away from a family that had never understood me.

But I underestimated you.

I underestimated Claire.

And I underestimated Daniel.

Now you have taken everything.

There is only one thing left.

The truth about your grandfather.

Sofia frowned.

Her grandfather, Charles Valmont, had died before she was born.

She continued reading.

Charles knew about the financial network before his death. He discovered the first fraudulent adoption records and threatened to report the people involved.

He died before he could.

You may want to ask Eleanor why.

Sofia looked up.

Eleanor had gone pale.

Adrien stared at his mother.

“What does she mean?”

Eleanor's hands trembled.

“I don't know.”

But Sofia saw fear in her eyes.

She continued reading.

If you want the final answer, come to the place where it all began.

The old lake house.

Midnight.

Come alone.

Or the last witness dies.

Sofia lowered the letter.

Bennett immediately shook his head.

“It's a trap.”

Adrien agreed.

“Absolutely not.”

Sofia looked toward Eleanor.

“What happened at the lake house?”

Eleanor stared at the floor.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Your grandfather died there.”

Adrien frowned.

“Father died of a heart attack.”

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“That's what the doctor said.”

Sofia felt cold.

“What really happened?”

Eleanor began crying.

“I found him on the floor. Vivian was standing beside him.”

Adrien stared at her.

“Mother?”

Eleanor looked devastated.

“She told me he had collapsed during an argument.”

Sofia whispered:

“Did you call an ambulance?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see what happened before he collapsed?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

Bennett leaned forward.

“Then we need to investigate.”

Eleanor covered her face.

“I should have questioned everything.”

Sofia reached for her hand.

“Then help us question it now.”

That evening, Bennett's team prepared a controlled operation at the lake house.

Sofia would not go alone.

The property would be surrounded.

And investigators would attempt to arrest Vivian if she appeared.

But at 11:58 p.m., Sofia received a video call.

Vivian appeared on the screen.

She was standing inside the old lake house.

Behind her sat a man tied to a chair.

His face was bruised.

His mouth covered with tape.

Sofia gasped.

“Detective Bennett?”

Vivian smiled.

“Yes, Isabella.”

Sofia looked toward the man beside her.

Bennett was supposed to be coordinating the operation.

But he was now a prisoner.

Vivian leaned closer.

“COME INSIDE ALONE, OR THE MAN WHO NEVER STOPPED LOOKING FOR YOU DIES AT MIDNIGHT.”
