Chapter 8 - Intervention In The Alley

The damp concrete of the sidewalk held the chill of the late-night drizzle, reflecting the amber glow of a distant sodium streetlamp. The man who had followed me from the diner exit—broad-shouldered, wearing a dark wool overcoat that swallowed his silhouette—closed the distance between us with terrifying economy. His boots made a wet, heavy sound against the pavement. I backed away until my spine hit the cold brick wall of the abandoned brick warehouse, my breath pluming white in the freezing air. My fingers curled into the fabric of my apron, still tucked into the waistband of my black trousers. There was nowhere left to run. The mouth of the alley was blocked, and the main thoroughfare was too far away for anyone to hear a cry.
"You dropped something back there at the restaurant, sweetheart," the man rasped, his voice flat and devoid of any warmth. He reached out a gloved hand, his fingers curling toward my collar with casual brutality. "Boss wants a word with the little girl who likes to play messenger."
I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the impact, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. But the blow never landed.
Instead, a sharp hiss of pneumatic tires tearing across wet asphalt split the quiet of the alley. A sleek, matte-black sedan slid out of the shadows with terrifying speed, cutting off the mouth of the alley and throwing a blinding wash of high-beam headlights against the brickwork. The heavy doors flew open before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop. Two men in sharp black suits emerged with synchronized precision, moving with the practiced, silent efficiency of predators.
Before the man in the wool overcoat could even pivot toward the vehicle, one of the operatives slammed into him with bone-crushing force, driving him hard into the brick wall. The sound of air evacuating the attacker's lungs was sharp and wet. A second operative swept his legs out, putting him facedown onto the wet pavement in a fluid motion, pinning a knee into the small of his back while a heavy zip-tie clicked tight around his wrists.
"Clear," the second man muttered into a lapel mic, his voice a low drone.
The rear door of the sedan swung open smoothly. A pair of polished leather shoes stepped out onto the wet asphalt, followed by the hem of dark trousers and the unmistakable glint of a heavy gold watch catching the amber streetlamp light. Leo. The dark-haired mafia boss stood tall against the interior lighting of the car, his black polo fitting tightly across a chest covered in heavy, dark arm tattoos. He didn't look at the pinned enforcer thrashing mutely against the pavement. His dark, calculating eyes locked entirely onto me.
He took two deliberate steps forward, closing the space between us with an imposing gravity. His expression was completely unreadable—a mask of hard angles and restrained tension under the warm spill of overhead street lighting. He stopped just inches away, towering over me, his jaw tightening slightly as he took in my trembling hands and the pale, terrified expression on my face.

"You've got a habit of inserting yourself into dangerous rooms," Leo said, his voice a low, resonant baritone that carried easily over the hum of the idling engine. There was no anger in his tone, only a chilling, intense curiosity that made the air between us crackle with tension. He looked down at me, his gaze dropping briefly to the white napkin still crumpled in my fist before rising back to meet my eyes. "Get in the car."
