Chapter 13 - Through The Back Streets

The iron fire escape ladder rattled above us as Leo hauled himself down into the narrow, shadowed service alley behind the warehouse. The rain had stopped, leaving the asphalt slick, reflecting the neon amber of distant storefront signs in wet ribbons of light. The air smelled of damp cardboard, rusted iron, and the heavy exhaust of idling delivery vans.

"Keep moving," Leo murmured, his voice low and flat, stripped of any warmth. He scanned the end of the alley where it intersected with a dark, cobblestone side street, his hand resting near his hip.

Behind him, Sloane stumbled sharply. Her heel caught in a seam of the cracked pavement, and she let out a sharp gasp, catching herself against the grimy brick wall with both hands. The silk copper-orange slip dress, so pristine back at the restaurant, was now smeared with soot along the hem. Her blonde waves were unravelling, sticking to her damp forehead. She was shivering, not just from the chill of the midnight air, but from the raw exhaustion of the past hour.

Without thinking, I slowed my pace and stepped back to her side. Sloane looked up at me, her dark-lined eyes wide with a mixture of residual pride and sheer panic. She expected me to keep going, to leave her behind in the dirt, or perhaps she expected a sharp word. Instead, I reached out and caught her forearm, bracing her weight as she righted herself.

"Take off the shoes," I said quietly, keeping my voice steady so it wouldn't carry down the canyon of brick walls.

"I can't just walk barefoot in this," she breathed back, her voice shaking slightly.

"You can if you want to keep up," I replied, leaning down for a second to help her slip the high-heeled sandals off. I carried them in one hand, leaving her in stocking feet against the damp grit of the pavement. For a fraction of a second, the guarded armor she had worn at the upscale restaurant slipped away, replaced by something entirely human. She gave a small, jerky nod of acknowledgment.

Up ahead, Leo froze, pressing his back flat against the side of a rusted dumpster. His tattooed forearm braced against the wall as he signaled for absolute silence with a slight downward gesture of his chin.

Footsteps echoed from the mouth of the alley—heavy, deliberate boots striking the cobblestones. Two men, silhouettes against the hazy streetlights beyond, turned into our corridor. They weren't police; they moved with the loose, predatory slouch of professionals looking for a target.

Leo didn't hesitate. He motioned for us to pull back into the deep shadow of an open loading bay. I dragged Sloane back with me, pressing us against the cold metal of a shuttered roll-up door. My heart hammered against my ribs, a suffocating drumbeat.

The first pursuer cleared the corner, his gaze fixed straight ahead, scanning the ground. He didn't see Leo crouching in the darkness just a few feet past the loading bay's edge.

When the man stepped past, Leo moved with terrifying efficiency. There was no hesitation, no wasted motion. One heavy arm wrapped around the man's throat, cutting off any shout before it could form, while his other hand forced the man's weight downward against the pavement. The confrontation was over in seconds—a muffled thud, a sharp intake of breath, and then dead weight hitting the ground. The second pursuer, realizing too late that his partner had vanished, shouted an alarm and rushed forward into the shadows.

Leo stepped out to meet him head-on, using the momentum of the narrow space to sweep the second man's legs out from under him. He delivered a single, calculated strike that left the man crumpled against the brick wall, sliding down into a quiet heap.

Leo stood over them for a heartbeat, his chest rising and falling heavily under his black polo, his gold watch glinting under the pale light of a security bulb overhead. He didn't look back as he motioned with his head for us to follow.

"This way," he said, his voice hard. "The parking structure is half a block over. Move."
