Chapter 9 - The Audio Evidence

"I didn't come here to sign anything, Arthur," I said, stepping forward out of the shadows near the doorway, my voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering against my ribs. I raised the tablet in my hand, the screen glowing softly in the dim boardroom light, casting an eerie blue reflection across the polished mahogany surface. "And I certainly didn't come to take the fall for your embezzlement scheme."

Vance's smug smile vanished completely, replaced by a cold, hardened stare as he recognized the device in my hand. He gripped the edges of the table with white knuckles, his composure fracturing under the sudden weight of exposure. "You're holding a dead tablet, Ms. Evans. The internal foundation servers were scrubbed clean at midnight. You have nothing."

"Not this server," Marcus said, stepping out from the doorway behind me and tossing a secondary encrypted backup drive onto the center of the mahogany table. It slid across the polished wood with a soft scrape and came to a sudden stop right in front of Vance's crystal water glass. "Every single wire transfer from the foundation's offshore accounts to your personal real estate holdings in the Cayman Islands was mirrored in real-time. Including the audio recording of your conversation with the men you hired to intimidate Clara in the archive room."

The color drained instantly from Vance's face, leaving him looking hollow and desperate. The two corporate attorneys flanking Julian shifted uncomfortably in their leather seats, immediately pulling their briefcases closer and physically distancing themselves from Vance's side of the table to protect their own licenses. Julian didn't wait for Vance to recover his breath; he strode around the length of the conference table, his eyes never leaving mine, crossing the distance between us with long, urgent strides.

"Did they touch you anywhere else?" Julian asked quietly, his hands coming up to gently frame my face, his thumbs brushing my cheekbones with an intense, fierce tenderness that completely ignored every person standing in the room.

"I'm fine," I whispered, leaning into his touch as the overwhelming relief finally broke through the heavy armor I had worn all morning. "Julian, I'm so sorry. I thought—"

"I know what you thought," he interrupted softly, his forehead resting against mine for a brief, grounding second before he turned back to face the room. "And we are going to fix every single part of this together."
