Chapter 12 - Turning the Page

Morning sunlight filtered through the pine boughs outside the bedroom window, casting long, fractured shadows across the wooden floorboards. My phone buzzed quietly on the nightstand—an email notification from the federal prosecutor's office confirming that Arthur Vance had been formally indicted on twelve counts of wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy. The legal battle was officially underway, but for us, the immediate danger had dissolved into the morning mist rising off the lake.
Julian stood by the open window, wearing a simple gray t-shirt and dark trousers, watching a pair of mallards glide across the calm water below. The city skyline felt like a distant, unpleasant dream from another lifetime.
"Marcus called an hour ago," Julian said without turning around. "The board has dissolved the executive committee. They're liquidating the remaining assets and restructuring under a completely independent oversight board. Our names are cleared of any involvement."
"And the penthouse?" I asked, sitting up against the headboard and pulling the light cotton blanket around my shoulders.
"Listed for sale this morning," Julian replied, turning to look at me with a faint, genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time in weeks. "Every piece of furniture, every glass wall, every memory of that place—we're leaving it behind. We don't need a monument to corporate power to prove who we are."

I swung my legs over the edge of the bed, feeling the last dull ache in my ribs fade completely under the morning warmth. "Good. Because I'm tired of living in glass towers."
We spent the rest of the morning packing the few personal items we had brought to the cabin into the trunk of the car. There was no hesitation, no lingering regret over the high-rise or the life we were abandoning. We were trading the pressure-cooker world of foundation boards and corner offices for something real, tangible, and entirely our own. By noon, the car was loaded, and we took one last look across the quiet lake before turning the ignition and heading further down the country highway, away from the state line.
