Chapter 15: The Return to the Dining Room

The upscale restaurant dining room looked exactly as it had on that fateful evening weeks ago. The dark wood paneling gleamed beneath the warm, golden glow of pendant lamps, and the large windows offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline as dusk settled over the horizon in shades of violet and amber. The ambient murmur of low conversation and the soft clink of crystal silverware filled the air.

This time, however, I wasn't wearing a white shirt and a green apron. I wore a backless evening gown of deep emerald silk that caught the warm restaurant lighting, my brown hair pinned up in an immaculate, elegant bun that framed my face. I walked across the polished parquet floor beside Marcus, who wore a tailored black tuxedo with his shirt collar open just enough to reveal the edge of the dark ink winding across his collarbone.

The head maître d', who had once watched me nervously wipe down tables with a damp rag, rushed forward with a look of deferential panic, bowing slightly as he pulled out the corner booth overlooking the grand city view.

"Mr. Vance... Miss Emily," the maître d' stammered, pulling out our seats with trembling hands. "Your usual table is prepared. May I bring you champagne to start?"

"Not champagne," Marcus said, his voice calm and resonant as he slid into the plush leather booth opposite me. He looked up at the maître d' with a steady, unreadable gaze. "Bring us the house red, and the evening's tasting menu. We're celebrating a new beginning."

"Right away, sir," the maître d' murmured, retreating backward into the shadows of the kitchen service door.

I sat back against the leather upholstery, looking out through the massive glass windows at the glittering lights of the metropolis spreading out beneath us like a map of conquered territory. The terror, the isolation, the corporate war, and the ashes of my old routine felt like they belonged to another lifetime entirely. I was no longer a frightened waitress hiding behind a uniform; I was an equal partner sitting across from the most powerful man in the city.

Marcus reached across the crisp white tablecloth, his strong, calloused hand resting palm-up between us. Without hesitation, I placed my hand in his, my fingers intertwining naturally with his own. He traced the smooth skin of my wrist with his thumb, his dark eyes holding mine with an intensity that made the rest of the crowded dining room fade completely out of existence.

"You realize," Marcus said softly, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth, "that you completely upended my entire world the moment you walked up to that table."

"You brought this on yourself," I replied, a quiet challenge in my voice as I squeezed his hand back. "You shouldn't have handed me the serpent card if you didn't want me to keep it."

May you like

"I knew the second I pulled it from my pocket that you were the only person in this city strong enough to hold it," Marcus murmured, lifting my hand to his lips and pressing a warm, lingering kiss against my knuckles. "Welcome to your new life, Emily."

The city lights flickered on fully against the deepening dusk outside the glass, and for the first time in my life, I looked out at the vast horizon without an ounce of fear, knowing that whatever came next, we would face it together.
