Chapter 10: Smoke and Velocity

The armored town car tore through the damp downtown canyon at ninety miles per hour, the city lights streaking past the tinted windows in long, erratic smears of neon and gold. Inside the cabin, the air was thick with the scent of ozone and the sharp metallic tang of adrenaline. Vance's thinly veiled threat at the club had not been an isolated outburst; as soon as we stepped out into the courtyard, two black SUVs had shadowed our vehicle, their high beams flashing aggressively in our rear-view mirror before sliding alongside us to force us off the road. Marcus was in the front passenger seat now, leaning over the console as he spoke in a harsh, staccato burst into a encrypted satellite phone.

"They're burning their remaining leverage," Marcus muttered, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles knotted beneath his skin. He glanced back at me through the partition, his dark eyes sweeping over my face to check for injury. "Are you hit?" "I'm fine," I said, gripping the leather armrest as the car swerved violently to dodge a delivery truck at a red light. "They aren't just trying to scare us anymore, Marcus. They knew exactly which club we were visiting." Marcus turned back to the driver, his voice dropping into a deadly calm that frightened me more than his anger. "Take the lower bypass toward the harbor. We're cutting off their tail before they reach the safehouse."

The car plunged down a steep ramp into the industrial docklands, where towering shipping containers cast long, skeletal shadows across the wet asphalt. The pursuers dropped back slightly, hesitant to follow us into the maze of warehouses. Marcus reached across the console, his large, tattooed hand closing firmly over my trembling fingers. The skin-to-skin contact sent a sudden, electric shock through my veins, anchoring me against the violent rocking of the vehicle. "I told you your old life ends," Marcus said quietly, his thumb brushing steadily against my pulse point. "I didn't bring you into this war to let them touch you." I looked into his eyes, seeing the raw, unshielded truth behind his hardened facade, and for the first time, the terror of my new reality dissolved into something far more dangerous.
