Chapter 8: The Weight of Agency

The drive back to the high-rise penthouse was heavy with a different kind of tension. The flash drive rested securely in my pocket, holding enough evidence to put Vance and half the hospital board behind bars for decades. But as the elevator carried us up to the forty-second floor, the adrenaline began to fade, leaving behind a sharp, stinging exhaustion.

Dominic walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, pouring two fingers of dark amber whiskey into a heavy crystal glass. He didn't drink it; he just stared out at the rain-lashed city lights reflecting against the glass.

"You should leave the city tonight," Dominic said suddenly, his back to me. "Now that Vance knows we have the drive, he'll try to reach out through other channels. Legal or otherwise."

I set my stethoscope down on the marble counter with a sharp click. "Leave? After everything I just pulled off to get those files?"

"I brought you into this because I needed a surgeon in an alley," Dominic turned around, his dark eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce intensity. "I didn't bring you into this to make you a target for every corporate assassin on the eastern seaboard."

"Stop treating me like a liability you can relocate," I snapped, stepping closer, my voice rising past its professional restraint. "I lost my career, my livelihood, and my security because I refused to let patients die from poisoned IV bags. I am not running away now just because it makes your security detail nervous."

Dominic froze. For a long, breathless moment, the only sound in the penthouse was the drumbeat of rain against the glass. He looked down at me—really looked at me—not as a hired hand or a rescued civilian, but as an equal. The arrogant armor he wore cracked, revealing a deep, quiet respect underneath.

"You're remarkably stubborn, Maya Lin," he said quietly, taking a step forward until the space between us narrowed to inches.

"It's a prerequisite for the job," I replied, my voice dropping to a low whisper as my heart hammered against my ribs.
