Chapter 1: The Weight of Rain and Steel

Water streamed down my forehead, plastering stray strands of wet brunette hair against my temples and blurring the harsh yellow glow of the streetlamps overhead. Crouched beside the open door of the luxury black SUV in the wet city alleyway, I felt the bitter chill of the midnight rain soak completely through my grey hooded zip-up sweatshirt and the blue scrubs beneath. My lungs burned with the metallic tang of exhaust and wet asphalt. Only twenty minutes earlier, I had been standing in the sterile, fluorescent-lit administrative office of the city hospital, listening to the human resources director recite a cold list of budget cuts that left me jobless and adrift. Now, kneeling in the dirt with the skyscraper skyline shimmering like bruised glass in the background, my professional ruin felt entirely insignificant compared to the bleeding man slumped across the leather upholstery.

Dominic Vale loomed over me like a storm front, his tall, dark-haired frame encased in a charcoal suit jacket and a black shirt that clung heavily to his broad shoulders. His wet hair fell across his forehead, framing a face twisted with a terrifying, urgent intensity. When he shouted down at his brother—demanding that I save a man whose life was visibly draining onto the imported floor mats—his voice cut through the steady roar of the pouring rain with absolute authority.

"That's my brother. Save him," Dominic commanded, his hands clenching into fists at his sides as armed men in black suits stood sentinel a few yards away, keeping watch against the dark mouth of the alley.

Instead of shrinking back, a surge of pure, cold adrenaline steadied my fingers. I reached into my canvas tote bag, my fingers wrapping around the familiar, weighted coldness of my silver stethoscope. I pulled it out into the dim light and thrust my free hand outward, halting Dominic mid-sentence. My muscles tightened, every instinct from five years in the emergency room locking into place.

"First rule, stop giving me orders," I said, my voice cutting through the downpour with a sharp, uncompromising edge.

Dominic froze, his dark eyes widening fractionally in sheer disbelief that anyone would dare check his momentum. For a heartbeat, the rain seemed to suspend its roar, leaving only the sound of our ragged breathing and Julian’s shallow, rattling gasps from inside the vehicle. Dominic stared down at me, his gaze fierce, dangerous, and utterly unblinking.

"Do you know who you're talking to? Dominic Vale," he warned, his voice dropping an octave into a low, rumbling menace that would have terrified anyone else.

I didn't flinch. I kept my chin up, water dripping from the tip of my nose as I met his fierce gaze with absolute calm. The man was a fortress of arrogance and power, but right now, his brother was suffocating on his own blood, and he needed me far more than I needed him.

"Good. Now get me light," I demanded, leaning over the threshold of the SUV and pressing the cold metal diaphragm of the stethoscope directly against Julian's blood-stained chest to listen for the faint, faltering beat of a dying heart.
