Chapter 8 - Trust in the Balance

The private office was entirely silent save for the low, rhythmic hum of the small electric desk fan. Vincent sat behind the mahogany desk, the brass lamp illuminating the folded ledger pages I had laid out across the blotter. He hadn't touched his whiskey glass since he walked in; instead, his dark eyes moved slowly from the shaved deposit numbers to Dominic's distinct handwriting scrawled in the margins. Every line of numbers told a story of systematic theft, betrayal, and quiet arrogance running right beneath his nose.

I stood near the door with my hands resting quietly behind my back, my white button-down shirt and black apron crisp against the dark wood paneling. Vincent finally looked up, his expression unreadable, though the muscles along his jawline were locked tight.

"You're certain about these figures?" Vincent asked, his voice dangerously soft.

"Cross-referenced against the digital merchant receipts and the weekend door logs," I replied evenly. "The cash shortfall matches the exact nights Dominic was closing out the register alone. He wasn't just skimming; he was betting you wouldn't audit the secondary accounts while you were expanding operations across the river."

Vincent leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing the bridge of his nose with a thumb and forefinger. Dominic had been with him for five years, serving as a reliable hammer when tough enforcement was required on the streets. But loyalty built on fear and shared profit had a fragile expiration date when greed took over. Vincent stood up, walking slowly toward the window that looked out onto the darkening street corner.

"Loyalty is the only currency that matters in this district, Cassidy," Vincent said quietly, his gaze fixed on the rain beginning to streak the windowpane. "When someone in your inner circle decides to debase the coinage, the entire enterprise collapses from the inside out."

"What are you going to do?" I asked.

Vincent turned around, his eyes locking onto mine with a mixture of heavy realization and sharp resolve. "What has to be done. Dominic is suspended from all lounge operations effective immediately. His keys are being collected, and his access to the accounts is revoked. He'll be reassigned to remote warehouse inventory out in the industrial sector until further notice—a demotion that will make it clear to everyone on the payroll where he stands."

"He won't take that quietly," I warned, stepping closer to the desk. "He knows I'm the one who pulled the files."

"Let him try," Vincent said, stepping within arm's reach of me, the scent of expensive cologne and ozone mixing in the confined space. "He answers to me. And as for you, Cassidy... you've more than proven your value to this establishment. The $5,000 wager we made in the lounge was just the beginning. I'm doubling your security retainer starting tonight."

I held his gaze, feeling the sharp, undeniable pull of mutual respect hardening between us into something far more dangerous and enduring than a simple employer-employee pact.
